The pilot project was carried out close to the rural Semenyih town in Selangor, according to the Public Works Department (JKR) of the Hulu Langat district.

These innovative markings, which illuminate Jalan Sg Tekali B16 and Jalan Sg Lalng B19 when cars drive by, were finished on October 28. “This glow-in-the-dark road marking is our attempt to bring innovation into road engineering,” JKR said in a Facebook post. “Please do not be surprised if you happen to drive through the area.”

Before the road markings were painted, the surrounding area was dark with no street lights, making nighttime travel difficult for drivers.

After inspecting the markings on Wednesday night, Malaysia's Works Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi stated that they have a durability of up to ten hours and give off "a good glow effect" even in wet weather. JKR Hulu Langat also included images and videos of the new road markings, including how they light up in green at night when cars drive by, in the post.

Many Malaysians praised the innovation because it increased the safety of road users by allowing them to see the road markings despite the absence of lampposts in the area.

Some advocated for the nationwide expansion of glow-in-the-dark road markings, particularly in the interior where there are no street lamps.
