- Malaysia Bags RM63bil In US Investment With Ford Among Those In The List
According to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Malaysia has obtained a total of RM63 billion in proposed investments in the US, primarily from technology giants, as reported by MalaysiaKini.
In addition to the investments from Google, Enovix Corporation, Microsoft and TikTok, Ford Motor Company, a major player in the automotive industry, will also make an investment in Malaysia.
For the record, Ford is one of Thailand's largest automotive investors, having invested more than $3.4 billion since 1995. In 2021, the automaker announced the largest single investment in Thai history to support production of the next-generation Ranger pickup and Everest SUV for Thai and global customers.
According to a WSJ article from 2023, Ford Motor Company invested $4.5 billion in an Indonesian nickel processing plant in an effort to secure a supply of essential minerals for use in electric vehicle batteries.
The investment is Ford's first in the Southeast Asian country and demonstrates automakers' growing appetite for raw materials used in producing electric vehicle (EV) batteries.
As for Malaysia, specifics such as where the company would invest and how much money it would put into the country have not been disclosed. It is also unknown whether the investment plans include vehicle manufacturing in the country, and to what extent electrification will play a role.
