Human Resources Minister, V Sivakumar, recently disclosed that there is currently only one (1) certified individual in the entire country capable of installing and maintaining electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. This limited number of certified professionals is due to the recent introduction of the certification course.

The certification was granted under the National Occupational Skills Standards (NOSS), which specifies the competencies required by skilled workers. The skills development department, overseen by the Human Resources Ministry, established the NOSS standards for EV charging station maintenance and repair programs in May.

Sivakumar expressed hope that the number of skilled graduates in this field would grow in the future, thanks to ongoing initiatives and promotional activities. He further added that there are currently eight certified individuals to service Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), while 82 individuals are qualified to service hybrid vehicles.

With Malaysia working towards its goal of establishing 10,000 EV charging stations by 2025 and only 1,430 charging stations currently operational, Sivakumar stated it is crucial for his ministry to collaborate with the Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry (Miti) to ensure a sufficient workforce to support the growth of the EV sector in Malaysia, as the country aims to become an EV hub.

However we at CariCarz are also questioning if the NOSS certification is even required? This is due to the fact that there are already 1,430 charging points up and running from Tesla and other CPO that were installed and are being maintained by a number of qualified Malaysian technicians, not only the one individual that is certified by NOSS. Moving forward, is the ministry going to make this certification compulsory in order for the technician to work on installing and maintaining EV charging stations? How would this affect the growth speed as 2025 is just around the corner.
