Mercedes-Benz And BMW Enters JV To Setup EV Fast-Charging Network In China
Rivalling German premium automakers Mercedes-Benz and BMW have announced a joint-venture to setup an EV fast-charging network in China.
It’s not often that we hear arch rivals finding common ground together and jointly build or develop something, but such instances do happen.
The most recent example borne out of the current shift towards electrification comes from China whereby leading premium German automakers Mercedes-Benz and BMW have announced a joint-venture (JV). Both brands confirmed this through official press statements issued earlier this week.
Through which, both firms will set out to establish their very own network of fast-chargers for electric vehicles (EVs) in what’s touted as the world’s largest automobile market which, concurrently, stands the world’s largest EV market too.
As equal partners, Mercedes-Benz and BMW aim to leverage on their EV charging know-how and their "in-depth understanding" of the new energy vehicle (NEV) market in China. Adding to which too is the promise of the venture harnessing state-of-the-art technologies present in their respective arsenals too.
Together, both firms are setting out to have no less than 1,000 EV fast-charging stations established in China by 2026 with a total of 7,000 points available.

Through this JV< both firms are also poised to leverage on their respective tech, know-how, and "in-depth understanding" of the NEV market in China.
The first of these jointly-developed Mercedes-Benz and BMW charging stations are se to become operational as early as next year (2024) starting in the most important Chinese NEV market regions. By the end of 2026, this JV aims to have established up to 1,000 stations with a total of 7,000 charging points available.
Additionally, this fast-charging network will also be opened to the broader public. Naturally though, priority access will be given to both Mercedes-Benz and BMW customers who will also enjoy a series of exclusive features such as plug and charge and online reservation for a seamless digital experience.
Both firms also added that, "where conditions allow," electricity supply for this joint network will be sourced directly from renewable sources. At the time of writting, this JV is still subject to approval by Chinese regulatory authorities.
