The charging segments wirelessly transfer electricity, which is subsequently transferred as energy to the vehicle's battery.
The first stretch of road in North America enabling wireless charging of electric vehicles was inaugurated in Detroit, Michigan this week, detroit news reported.
The 400-meter-long electrified road is situated in Detroit's Corktown neighborhood. Power-managing units have been placed on the side of the road, and inductive-charging copper coils have been installed beneath the surface of the road.
Through the use of a magnetic field, the charging segments wirelessly transfer electricity, which is subsequently transferred as energy to the vehicle's battery, Car and News wrote. 599776-premiere-en-amerique-une-route-de-recharge-a-induction-pour-vehicules-electriques.jpg

According to the City of Detroit, the road is "safe for drivers, pedestrians, and wildlife".

For the record, the company in charge of construction, Electreon, revealed the project in February 2022. The Israel-based company is in charge of comparable projects in China, France, Germany, Sweden, Italy, Norway, and Israel.

A receiver mounted to the underbody is a prerequisite for compatibility in a vehicle. According to Car and Driver, during an Electreon demonstration with a Ford E-Transit van, the charging rate hit 19 kW at one point.

The company intends to concentrate on public buses and last-mile delivery vehicles at first. It is important to note that the technology functions best when the cars are stopped, such as at a bus stop or intersection.
According to a report earlier this month by the Canadian Association for the Club of Rome (CACOR), engineers in Canada are considering wireless charging as a technology that “promises to revolutionize the way we power our cars,” “offering a future where EV owners can simply park their cars over a charging pad and have their batteries replenished without the need for any physical connection.”

However, the fundamental idea is not new, as it has been effectively integrated into numerous consumer electronics, like smartphones and smartwatches.

But expanding this technology for use in electric cars presents a far more difficult task. The problems of power transfer, charging speed, and safety must be solved by engineers in order to provide effective wireless charging for EVs.
