The much-anticipated Chery Omoda E5 EV SUV is set to make its Malaysian debut later in March 2024.

Chery Malaysia is set to usher in a new era of electromobility as the firm will launch its first-ever all-electric model, the Chery Omoda E5, later in March this year. Ahead of its eventual debut, this compact EV SUV is also poised to make a cameo at the upcoming Chery Eco Run 2024, happening later this month.

Ahead of its debut, we’ve had the opportunity to size up the Omoda E5 in a special media preview event. First-time previewed in Malaysia, the local-spec Omoda E5 shares the same T1X platform as its traditional combustion-powered twin. Motivation is provided by a single, front-mounted (FWD) electric motor rated at 201 HP and 340 NM, enabling a claimed 0-100 KM/H sprint in 7.6 seconds.

Harnessing BYD’s ‘Blade’ LFP-type battery with a 61-kWh capacity, the Omoda E5 boasts a maximum WLTP range figure of 430 KM. Its 80 kW DCFC allows the Omoda E5 to be juiced from 30% to 80% in 30 minutes, while the AC figure is capped at only 9.9 kW.

Besides respectable performance figures and familiar design, the Omoda E5 is also primed with Chery’s latest ADAS system, featuring no more than 16 functions. Included are the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Low Speed Follow, Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane-Departure Warning (LDW) and -Keeping Assist (LKA), Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA), Traffic Jam Assist (TJA), and more.

While the car has yet to make its official market entry, the Omoda E5 will make its first public cameo at the upcoming Chery Eco Run event, which is scheduled to take place later in Jan 7, 2024. Co-organised by Chery Malaysia and Jom Run with the theme of "A New Journey To A New Green Life'', the Omoda E5 will serve as the official lead car for this fun-run event, which is set to attract over 3,000 participants.
