- New BMW 5 Series And i5 Touring Teased
Latest teaser from BMW confirms eighth-gen (G60) 5 Series is set to see a long-roofed estate (wagon) version arrive in Spring this year.
We’ve known for sometime that the latest eighth generation (G60) BMW 5 Series will see a long-roofed estate (wagon) version developed. The latest teaser from the Bavarian marque has confirmed this intent and, notably, it will also see an all-electric i5 Touring twin too.
The incoming i5 Touring will stand as BMW’s first ever all-electric estate offering, and it’s expected to gain the same single- and dual-motor powertrain choices as the regular i5 sedan. Included too is the i5’s 84.3 kWh lithium-ion battery pack.
Malaysia-spec BMW i5 eDrive40 pictured. Launched in Nov 2023, the all-electric twin to the 5 Series is priced at RM419,800.
As a refresher, the recently launched BMW i5 eDrive40 harnesses a rear-mounted e-motor that drives the rear wheels with 335 HP and 430 NM. A peppier M60 xDrive variant is expected to arrive later, this one packing a dual-motor and all-wheel-drive (AWD) setup with 593 HP and 820 NM.
Having a longer roof and bigger boot will see the Touring versions of both the 5 Series and i5 weigh heavier than their saloon counterparts. In turn, this should see a slight reduction in acceleration and performance figures too, but not by much. Expect slightly lower range as a result too.
Apart from the veiled silhouette, BMW isn’t releasing any other details yet, but did confirm plans to introduce both sometime in the Spring season this year – which isn’t too long of a wait. However, their availability beyond key European markets remain questionable.
Despite its availability in both Thailand and Singapore, BMW Malaysia does not offer the M3 Touring - or any other Touring estate model - in Malaysia. Perhaps the booming local EV market could see the i5 Touring fare better.
Closer to home, BMW Malaysia hasn’t officially offered a Touring estate model for some time, and that’s despite the availability of things like the M3 Touring in both neighbouring Thailand and Singapore. This might change with the i5 Touring.
Would you be keen on an estate version of the latest eighth-gen 5 Series and i5? What sort of pricing should it command in Malaysia? As usual, hit the comments below – and our social media pages – with your take on this…
