The operation, known as Ops Khas 1/2024 involved Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan, Tawau, Papar, Kota Marudu in Sabah, and Miri in Sarawak as part of the operation. The investigation revealed that the misappropriation activity had been going on since the beginning of 2023. "In this case, a marine vessel operating with Petronas was found to have sold Petronas-owned diesel without authorisation. Nine individuals aged 32 to 61 suspected of being involved in the activity were detained.

"Among those detained include the ship captain, ship engineer, crew members, sales agent, and buyer," CCID director Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf said in a press conference here.

According to him, one of the nine people in custody made an appearance in Session Court 3 in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, on January 17 and was charged with violating Section 408 of the Penal Code.
"The suspect, a 60-year-old ship captain, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 18 months in prison starting from Jan 9.
