- BYD & CATL Lead Chinese Alliance In Solid State Battery Technology
With the goal of accelerating the development of solid state EV battery technology, Chinese automakers and battery giants such as BYD subsidiary FinDreams Battery, CATL, NIO, CALB, EVE Energy and Gotion High-tech are forming a strong alliance.
Leaders in the industry and academic institutions work together under the China All-Solid-State Battery Collaborative Innovation Platform (CASIP) to advance the commercialisation of solid-state batteries for electric vehicles (EVs).
With BYD and CATL alone controlling more than 50% of the global EV battery market, China is presently leading the field. China's determination to maintain this position as the world leader in EV battery tech is demonstrated by the creation of CASIP.
Under the direction of Tsinghua University professor Ouyang Minggao, CASIP seeks to reduce the risks associated with new technologies that might undermine China's current competitive advantage in the world market for EV batteries.
By fostering this collaboration among the top Chinese battery manufacturers and automakers, the alliance seeks to accelerate the development and commercialisation of all-solid-state batteries while also establishing a robust supply chain.
These alliances would also naturally look to surpass other players like Adden Energy, QuantumScape, and Toyota Idemitsu who are getting closer to deciphering the usage of solid-state battery technology for the EV market. The plan is to be achieved by utilising their collective expertise, member resources, and patent portfolios, in addition to strong government support, to maintain their market dominance.
Solid-state batteries have the potential to revolutionise the EV market by enabling longer driving ranges and faster charging times all while significantly offering the much needed weight reduction which is the achilles heel on all electric vehicles.
Furthermore, this initiative comes at a time when the EV industry is experiencing rapid growth and intense competition, making collaboration essential for driving innovation whilst maintaining market leadership.
