JPJ Issues 17,762 Summons To Foreign Drivers - Accident Fatality Up 8%

During the recent Special Operations which aligned with the Chinese New Year festivities last month, a total of 17,762 summonses were issued to foreign drivers for various infractions.

Datuk Lokman Jamaan, the Senior Director of Law Enforcement at the Road Transport Department (JPJ), listed the violations, which included driving without a Malaysian Driving Licence (6,380 summonses), driving without a Motor Vehicle Licence/Road Tax (2,120 summonses), driving without insurance (1,843 summonses) and others (7,419 summonses).

"These summonses to foreign drivers are part of the 165,553 summonses JPJ issued through nationwide integrated operations during the celebrations," he told reporters after an operation at the Skudai Toll Plaza last night.
Furthermore, 33 drivers, including those operating public vehicles, were detained this month after testing positive for drugs such as methamphetamine, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabis, and opiates during urine screenings.

Meanwhile, Lokman reported an increase in fatal accidents last year compared to 2022, with 6,344 victims versus 6,080. "This represents an 8% increase. Of the 6,344 victims, approximately 4,000 were motorcyclists.
"On average, one fatal accident occurred every two hours," he said.
