- New York City Welcomes Robotaxis, But Only With Safety Drivers
New York City has introduced a new permitting system for companies interested in testing self-driving vehicles on its streets. Eric Adams, the city's mayor, announced the system, which requires a human safety driver to be present in the vehicle at all times, The Verge reported.
This move comes as other cities, including San Francisco, grapple with the complexities of fully autonomous vehicles.
The new system is described as "a rigorous permitting program" that ensures applicants are ready to test their technology safely and effectively. The city's approach reflects its dedication to safety in one of the country's most challenging urban environments.
Companies who have not previously tested autonomous vehicles in other urban environments will not be able to participate in the new regulations. Data from prior tests is required of applicants; this includes information on any accidents and situations in which safety drivers had to step in.
It is worth noting that only autonomous vehicles accompanied by safety drivers will be allowed to test on the city's public roads.
A number of businesses, such as Cruise and Waymo, have introduced Level 4 automated cars. However, their deployment has been hampered by worries about safety and traffic disruption.
Regulators suspended the company's operations permit in October of last year after a pedestrian was dragged more than 20 feet to the curb in a major collision involving an autonomous Cruise vehicle in San Francisco.
