Ahmad maslan, the deputy works minister, stated during yesterday's Dewan Rakyat session as televised on KiniTV that smart lane activation on highways across the country will be extended beyond those run by PLUS Malaysia.

To raise awareness about the proper use of smart lanes, Ahmad continued, he will hold talks with PLUS Malaysia and the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM). The deputy minister of works also reaffirmed that emergency lanes on highways are not reserved for motorcycles in response to a question posed by Tampin member of parliament Mohd Isam Mohd Isa.

In addition, Isam mentioned that because the SmartLane sign boards on the relevant highway segments are too tiny, drivers are unable to see the information on them.

The Smart Lane initiative was first implemented as a test on the North Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE) in 2019 to alleviate traffic congestion on the Setia Alam route to the Shah Alam Toll exit during peak hours. Essentially, all lanes, including the emergency lane, will be opened up to traffic, with the goal of improving traffic flow and reducing congestion by 30 to 40 percent.

Following the test, Smart Lane activation has been extended to more locations along the PLUS highway, which is especially useful on stretches with only two lanes. Look for the yellow sign that reads "PENGAKTIFAN SMART LANE".
