IOI City Mall's 6 Destination Charger

It appears that Tesla Malaysia is accelerating the deployment of its Destination Chargers; the most recent one was seen at IOI City Mall and is still awaiting activation. The timing of this couldn't have been more ideal, as today also signifies the first day of the Model Y’s deliveries in Malaysia.

The Tesla Model Y, launched back in July 2023, was supposed to be delivered in early 2024, with buyers having waited for almost eight months to receive their cars.

First to be installed in an IOI Group owned site, the Destination Chargers in IOI City Mall follows on from the installation of a few charging stations in malls owned by Sunway and Pavilion groups. Just last month, Tesla displayed its body-in-white structure at a roadshow at IOI City Mall.

We believe that these Destination Chargers are exclusive to Tesla vehicles and not for use with other EVs (read: non-Teslas), based on the signage shown in the picture. Additionally, there is still no charge for any charging session at Destination Chargers, including the one at IOI City Mall.

As far as we are aware, IOI City Mall will have six (6) Destination Charger units when it launches. Currently, there are six Superchargers and eight Destination Charger stations in Malaysia, with a total of thirty Superchargers and thirty-seven Destination Chargers spread throughout important cities.

Furthermore, a brief examination of Plugshare reveals that Tesla Malaysia has established its most extensive public charging station at Gamuda Cove, housing six 250kW Superchargers and eighteen Destination Chargers. However, this site may be of interest to those who are actually travelling down south, as it is located quite a distance away from the people in the Klang Valley.

Though relevant parties like the Energy Commission (ST) have promised a 30-day turnaround time, there has been no news on when these locations that have been mentioned thus far will go live. As we all know, the entire licensing process in Malaysia takes a long time.
