Nio Develops 150 kWh Semi-Solid-State Battery - Lighter Than BYD’s Blade With 1,055KM Range
Chinese electric vehicle startup Nio unveiled the world's first mass-produced semi-solid-state battery pack, which promises significant improvements in energy density and range. It packs an energy density of 260 Wh/kg, which enables it to travel up to 1,055 KM in range.
Founded in 2014 as a premium electric vehicle outfit, Nio has always offered its vehicles with two primary battery options: 75 kWh and 100 kWh. Furthermore, customers are also given a third option of subscribing to a battery service, whereby the purchase of the vehicles is separated from the power source.
The outfit now intends to offer a third battery option, a 150 kWh pack optimised for longer excursions, which will be available solely through subscription.
The 150 kWh solid-state-battery is produced in collaboration with WeLion New Energy Technology. It has an overall 360 Wh/kg cell energy density and 260 Wh/kg for the total pack. This innovative semi-solid-state battery also has a cooling system that is six times more powerful than ordinary batteries, adding to its exceptional efficiency.
The best part of this innovative battery pack is that despite housing 150 kWh capacity, it weighs just 676 KG - 20 KG more than Nio's 100 kWh battery pack. Furthermore, an equivalent capacity LFP Blade battery from rivals BYD weighs 903 KG, demonstrating Nio and WeLion's tremendous effort into weight reduction.
Meanwhile in a real world test, Nio’s CEO William Li had managed to pilot a Nio ET7 primed with a 150 kWh semi-solid-state battery to clock a driving distance of 1,044 KM on a single charge. Although there has been no solid confirmation on the actual delivery date for the 150 kWh semi-solid-state battery, Nio has hinted at a second-quarter of 2024 release.
