- MAS 2024: Jaecoo J6 EV SUV Previewed – 279 HP, 500 KM Range
Making its inaugural local debut at the Malaysia Autoshow 2024 is the Jaecoo J6 off-road-ready EV SUV.
Just about a month since we saw one in China, the enigmatic Jaecoo J6 has finally made its maiden Malaysian debut at the ongoing Malaysia Autoshow 2024 (MAS 2024). Basically a Chery iCar 03 in Jaecoo’s outfit, the J6 is set to become the brand’s first proper off-road-ready EV SUV.
Compared to the unit we saw during the Chery International Business Conference last month, the J6 displayed at Jaecoo Malaysia’s MAS 2024 booth appears to have undergone some slight design changes. The two most notable differences are the front grille design that features the iCar badge instead of the Jaecoo lettering, as well as the presence of a dedicated storage box placed on its tailgate.
The slight changes continue as we get inside, with the J6 displayed here in Malaysia coming with a white and black interior colour combo instead of the green-black one we saw in China. Besides the colour change, the cabin equipment appears to be similar, with both China-spec models featuring a left-hand-drive (LHD) configuration.
A quick tour of the J6’s powertrain setup shows that this J-badged EV SUV harnesses the same powertrain setup as we saw on its iCar twin. While the lower variants sport a single, RWD motor setup rated at 184 HP and 220 NM, the high-spec model gets a peppier dual-motor 4WD setup that delivers a total system output of 279 HP and 385 NM of twist.
Said motors are juiced by a 69.8-kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack sourced by CATL, allowing this rugged EV SUV to travel at up to 500 KM on the more lenient CLTC standards.
As of now, Jaecoo Malaysia has yet to iterate on any plans to introduce the Jaecoo J6 into our market. Given that its full ICE product lineup, namely both the Jaecoo J7 and J8, is set to make its local debut some time later in Q2 this year, perhaps we can expect the J6 to make a surprise entry later in 2025.
Those who are keen to size up this boxy yet handsome EV SUV can check out Jaecoo Malaysia’s booth at the Malaysia Autoshow 2024, happening at MAEPS Serdang from May 22 to 26.
