JPJ Will Upgrade Traffic Cameras With Automated Number Plate Recognition System
The Road Transport Department (JPJ) will replace the outdated Automatic Awareness Safety System (AWAS) cameras with newer models that incorporate Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology.
In a statement, JPJ director-general Aedy Fadly Ramli stated that the upgrade, which will take place gradually, is in keeping with the most recent developments in ANPR technology to guarantee improved performance.
"The replacement involves the Redflex model cameras, which need to be changed due to major damage and the lack of support from the manufacturer," stated Aedy.
According to him, the purpose of AWAS cameras is to enforce traffic light and speed limit violations as well as other offenses under the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333), with the ultimate goal of lowering the number of accidents and fatalities caused by them. Vehicle images will be taken by a high-resolution camera, which then uses hardware and software to identify and extract license plate information. This information is then quickly identified and verified by comparing it to a vehicle database.
In order to prioritize personal and family safety while driving, JPJ calls on all users of the road to cooperate and take the necessary actions to abide by the laws that have been established as well as to be understanding of other users.
