- BYD Seal 06 GT Set For Oct 18 Debut in China – From RM90K
The BYD Seal 06 GT, a highly anticipated electric hatchback from the world’s largest new energy vehicle (NEV) brand, is set to officially enter the Chinese market on Oct 18, as reported by CarNewsChina. Initially scheduled for a late September launch, the release was delayed, as confirmed by BYD Ocean Series General Manager Zhang Zhuo.
Presales for the Seal 06 GT began in late August, with the model priced between RMB 150,000 (RM90,000) and RMB 200,000 (RM120,000) placing the hatchback in a competitive position within China’s growing EV market.
The Seal 06 GT stands out with its innovative design and advanced engineering. It is built on BYD’s latest e-Platform 3.0 Evo, featuring the brand’s signature Marine Aesthetics design language. Its exterior showcases a sporty front bumper, sleek LED headlights, and a full-width tail light unit.
Measuring 4,630 mm in length, 1,880 mm in width, and 1,490 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,820 mm, the Seal 06 GT is notably larger than typical hatchbacks. It slots between BYD’s Dolphin EV hatchback and Seal EV saloon while being larger than rivals like the MG4 and Volkswagen ID.3 GTX.
Inside, the Seal 06 GT maintains BYD's familiar interior layout, offering a 15.6-inch rotatable floating infotainment screen, a 10.25-inch instrument cluster, and a 12-inch HUD. Additional features include wireless charging pads and the DiLink 100 cockpit system.
Three powertrain options are mulled: a 214 HP rear-wheel drive (RWD) variant, a 221 HP RWD variant, and a more powerful 4WD variant delivering 415 HP and capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds. The model offers two battery capacities, 60 kWh and 73 kWh, providing a CLTC range between 505 KM and 605 KM.
In terms of competition, the Seal 06 GT occupies a unique spot in the market. As we mentioned above, the MG4, for instance, offers a more compact design and targets urban drivers with slightly lower power output with exception to its XPOWER variant, while the Volkswagen ID.3 GTX features a similar 4WD option but at a higher price point.
Now despite the low popularity of hatchbacks in China, the Seal 06 GT’s with its blend of performance, space, and price does hope to garner some interest from a niche segment of buyers. We too have to weigh in that given China population numbers, a niche segment is quite large on a global scale.
