These cutting-edge batteries, which have an energy density of roughly 300 Wh/kg, are meant to provide Hyundai with a competitive advantage over well-known Chinese producers like CATL and BYD.

Hyundai's goals go far beyond the IONIQ series, which has drawn notice for its affordability and efficiency. The company is actively working to improve battery performance and reduce dependency on foreign suppliers with significant domestic partners, such as LG Energy Solution, Samsung SDI, and SK On.

Batteries from CATL are already used in the Hyundai Kona EV and the Kia Ray. But Hyundai is going its own way because of the new tariffs the US and EU have placed on Chinese EV imports.

Like entry-level nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) batteries, the recently developed Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries are anticipated to be installed in mid- to low-cost small electric vehicles. By improving entry-level EV technology, this approach seeks to bridge the so-called "electric vehicle chasm," a brief decline in EV market demand.

Hyundai Motor unveiled the "Hyundai Way," its mid-to-long-term strategy, at the CEO Investor Day 2024 in August. By 2030, the company wants to increase the capacity of next-generation solid-state batteries, NCM batteries, and internal LFPs by more than 20%.
