smart #5 Launched In China - Up To 579HP, 740 KM Range, From RM146K

Exactly two-months after we ran the first look feature, the smart #5 has now officially launched in China.

Based on smart’s current brand direction, the #5 will be a pure BEV similar to the #1 and #3. For now, it sits as the largest offering from the brand, targeting the mid-size C-Segment SUV space.

As reported, the #5 sits 4,705 MM long with a 2,900 MM wheelbase, 1,920 MM wide, and between 1,705 MM and 1,830 MM tall - depending on trim line. It also boasts ground clearance figures ranging between 156 MM and 231 MM.

Initial launch details reveal that the smart #5 will be available in four variants priced from RMB239,900 to RMB368,000 (RM146,000 – RM225,000). In China it will also see eight colour choices together with six interior colour options.

The four variants offered together with its drivetrain and CLTC range are:

  1. Long Range Adventure Standard Edition - RWD, 570 KM range
  2. Long Range Adventure Deluxe Edition - RWD, 570 KM range
  3. Ultra-Long Range Deluxe Edition - RWD, 740 KM range, 800V platform
  4. Jungle Realm Limited Edition - AWD, 580 KM range, 800V platform

The Jungle Realm Limited Edition stands out thanks to its unique outdoor adventure package. This limited edition guise includes an X-shaped roof platform, luggage racks, side ladder, side steps, small container mounted on the side, and a stowed trailer hinge.

In general the #5 offers a towing capacity of 1.6 tonnes with a luggage rack capable of supporting 240 KM in static load and 100 KM in dynamic load. Additionally, the trunk comes equipped with a 220V power interface, enabling the V2L (vehicle-to-load) function.

The four variants offered in both rear-wheel-drive (RWD) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) configurations are:

- RWD with a 0-100 KM/H acceleration time of 6.5 secs

  • 570 KM CLTC range option - 250 kW (335 hp) features a 76kWh LFP battery.
  • 740 KM CLTC range option - 267 kW (358 hp) equipped with a 100 kWh ternary lithium battery.

- AWD with a 0-100 KM/H sprint time of 4.9 secs

  • 580 KM CLTC range - 165 kW (221 HP) front motor with a 310 kW (416 HP) rear motor, delivering a combined output of 432 kW (579 HP).

All smart #5 will feature three standard driving modes: energy saving, comfort, and sport while the top of the range AWD variant gets an additional all-terrain driving mode. As for safety, the #5 comes standard equipped with eight airbags and optional zero-gravity seat cushion airbag.

On board, the #5 boasts dual 13-inch AMOLED 2.5K displays with co-pilot entertainment screen, a 10.3-inch LCD instrument cluster and a 25.6-inch AR-HUD all powered by an AMD V2000 chip.

Additionally, all RWD variants get a nine-speaker audio setup whilst the AWD variant packs the new top-shelf Sennheiser audio package instead.

As the largest offering from the brand, the #5 will offer a spacious interior complete with 34 storage compartments. Key to which are its 72-litre frunk, 110-litre hidden storage space under the boot floor, and 630-litre standard boot space that’s expandable to 1,530 litres.

One standout feature in the #5 that sets it apart from all other cars is the integration of the world’s first 233-inch automotive-grade full-colour laser projector. This accessory was built for perfect movie projection outdoors whilst “glamping”.

All smart #5 will also come standard Level-2 ADAS featuring 23 safety assistance features which include traffic jam assist, blind-spot monitoring, forward and rear collision mitigation, lane change assist, and parking assist. These features are part of the smart Pilot Assist 3.0 intelligent driving system powered by a dual Nvidia Drive OrinX autonomous driving chips.

With the launch of the smart #5 In China, it's highly likely that we will see it introduced to other global markets as early as this year-end, including right-hand drive (RHD) variants.

For Malaysia, there's a strong chance that we might catch a preview of the smart #5 at the upcoming KLIMS 2024, whilst its official Malaysian launch is expected in Q1 2025.
