MITI Deputy Minister Liew Ching Tong revealed in Dewan Rakyat this week that his ministry will team up with the Selangor and Johor state governments to establish at least one DCFC across all districts.

The Ministry of Investment, Trade & Industry (MITI) reportedly revealed that it will collaborate with both the Selangor and Johor state governments towards establishing at least one DC fast charger (DCFC) for electric vehicles (EVs) in every district.

MITI Deputy Minister Liew Chin Tong confirmed this earlier this week in Dewan Rakyat, further revealing that this also falls under the government’s initiative towards achieving its goal of establishing no less than 10,000 EV charging stations nationwide by 2025.

"We hope that following the pilot project with the Selangor and Johor state governments, we can extend this programme to cover all districts in both states, ensuring comprehensive access to DC chargers," said Liew.

This came as a response to questions raised about the government’s strategy in ensuring adequate EV charging infrastructure aligning with the increased adoption of EV nationwide by Datuk Ku Abd Rahman Ku Ismail (PN-Kubang Pasu).

Liew also emphasised MITI's recognition of DCFCs playing a critical role towards the increased adoption of EVs in Malaysia. To date, the MITI says there are 500 active DCFCs operational nationwide.

In regards to the increased EV adoption numbers mentioned, Liew shared that 33,319 xEVs – hybrids, plug-in hybrids, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs – have been sold in Malaysia as of Sept 30.

Liew further highlighted that there are 500 active DCFCs nationwide. Liew also emphasised MITI’s recognition of DCFCs playing a critical role in expediting EV charging, hence said ministry’s raised target from 1,000 to 1,500 units of which by 2025.

The Deputy Minister also highlighted various initiatives to strengthen the EV ecosystem and domestic industry have been undertaken to boost local EV production, as well as supporting sustainable development goals (SDG) 2050 targets.
