- XPeng Reveals 1,400 KM “Kunpeng” Range Extender & “Turing” AI Chip
XPeng Motors held its XPeng AI Day recently where Chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng highlighted key innovations. It include the highly anticipated XPeng Kunpeng Super Electric System and the “Turing” AI Intelligent Driving System.
Addressing global EV charging challenges, XPeng unveiled the Kunpeng Super Electric System, the brand's first combustion range extender system engineered for a next-level range and charging experience.
Built on an 800V high-voltage silicon carbide platform, the system combines ultra-fast 5C charging with a hybrid silicon carbide electric drive, maximising efficiency and reliability. A key feature is its noise-reducing range extender, which operates as quietly as 1 dB.
The Kunpeng system’s ultra-fast charges at a rate of 1 KM of range per second, achieving an 80% charge in just 12 minutes. Additionally, XPeng’s AI Battery Doctor actively monitors battery health, extending battery life by up to 30%.
With a pure electric range of 430 KM and an overall range exceeding 1,400 KM, this system raises the bar for EV convenience, efficiency, and performance.
Also showcased in the AI Day was XPeng’s “Turing” AI Intelligent Driving System (NGP) which claims to push the boundaries of autonomous driving. This custom “Turing” AI chip, equipped with 40 cores, supports complex vehicle models with up to 30 Billion parameters and completed over 2,700 functional verifications in just 40 days - three times the industry standard.
This system leverages the Canghai Platform, which enables full Level-4 autonomy with 33 times the data bandwidth and 12 times faster image processing for enhanced safety. This robust foundation allows XPeng’s vehicles to deliver a highly adaptive, intelligent driving experience that continually evolves through cloud updates.
Additionally, with the “Turing” AI chip, XPeng’s AIOS will redefine the in-car experience, incorporating large AI models like GPT-4o to enable seamless, human-like interactions.
XPeng also plans to roll out the “Turing” AI chip upgrades to current Pro variant users at a cost of RMB19,999 (RM12,000), enhancing the driving and cockpit features across its fleet. The models included in this upgrade exercise are the XPeng P71 Pro, G9 Pro/Plus, G6 Pro/Plus, and X9 Pro. However, the rollout will proceed only if at least 1,000 owners sign up before Dec 12, 2024. We hope this rollout will eventually be available to G6 owners globally, including in Malaysia.
During the event, Xiaopeng also shared its advancements in autonomous taxis, flying cars, and robotics. Reflecting on XPeng’s ten-year journey, he added, “Our AI capabilities are our strongest advantage as we shape the future of mobility.”
Later today, XPeng will officially launch the P7+, the world's first AI-defined vehicle.
