The Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) has issued a stern reminder to all drivers, emphasizing that emergency lanes are not meant to be used as exclusive lanes. LLM Director-General Datuk Sazali Harun expressed particular concern for motorcycle riders, urging them to exercise heightened caution when using emergency lanes to avoid potentially fatal accidents.

“The awareness that needs to be there is that the emergency lane is not exclusive to us; this lane is used by all types of vehicles to stop if they experience damage. So we need to be more careful; this is important.”

“Every day I receive messages regarding fatal accidents caused by motorcycles hitting stationary vehicles, so we are trying to find a solution to this problem,” he said in a Bernama report.

According to Sazali, the implementation of Smart Lanes has raised awareness among motorcycle riders. “In the past, motorcyclists would react aggressively, sometimes even kicking other vehicles using the emergency lane. Now, they understand that it is to be shared with everyone,” he said.
Introduced in Malaysia in 2023, smart lanes are only allowed for light vehicles at certain times and places that are prone to traffic jams. They are activated during peak traffic hours to allow vehicles to use the emergency lane to reduce congestion.  240211-PLUS-highway-Smart-lane-emergency-lane-traffic-03-1024x817-(1).jpg
