Starting April 7 this year, all engine lubricants marketed in Malaysia will be required to bear a SIRIM label, says KPDN.

The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) confirmed that a SIRIM label is now compulsory for all engine lubricants marketed in Malaysia.

This requirement applies to engine lubricants that are both imported from overseas, or produced and manufactured locally. These must now obtain a certificate of authenticity through SIRIM QAS International Sdn Bhd.

Official statement by KPDN detailing the SIRIM label requirement for engine lubricants in Malaysia effective April 7.

The new law was confirmed by KPDN via an official statement issued yesterday. The new ruling takes effect and will be enforced this year starting from April 7 onwards, adds the Ministry via said official statement.

Falling under the Trade Descriptions Order (Certification and Marking of Engine Oil for Motor Vehicles) 2024, the move is aimed towards combatting and curbing counterfeits and fakes - like this recent case involving faked Perodua engine lubricants.

The requirement applies to both locally-produced and imported engine lubricants, with the aim of combatting fakes and counterfeits.

Prior to its upcoming enactment and enforcement, the government had given manufacturing companies six months to comply with the directives regarding the gazette order, starting Oct 11, 2024.

“This new order will enable consumers to identify the sale of genuine motor vehicle engine oil in the market, thus curbing the sale of counterfeit oil which could pose safety risks and cause accidents on the road,” said Armizan Mohd Ali, Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living.

At the same time, the new ruling seeks to protect engine oil product manufacturing companies, adds KPDN further.

He adds that the ruling will also seek to protect motor vehicle engine oil product manufacturing companies by curbing the risk of the production of fakes and counterfeits by irresponsible parties.

Strict action will be taken against any importing company, distributor, or seller who sells uncertified products and does not have a valid compliance label from the authorities,” remarked Armizan further.
