Xiaomi YU7's Purosangue-Like Design Boosts Ferrari's Popularity In China
People used to laugh at Chinese car companies for copying Western designs. This was understandable when their industry was just starting out. But times have changed. China's car market is huge and really inventive now. Xiaomi however, hasn't learnt its lesson.
The tech giant’s latest EV SUV, the YU7, is causing a stir online in China about its design, echoing past discussions surrounding their SU7 sedan. The YU7 has been dubbed the "Ferrari Mi" because its design closely resembles the Ferrari Purosangue. And maybe with the face of a McLaren?
This comparison was further emphasized when both vehicles were displayed in a similar shade of green – Verde Dora for Ferrari and a color Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun stated was inspired by Colombian emeralds.
Ai Tiecheng, formerly of Nio's Onvo, commented on Weibo that "Entrepreneurs and consumers should support originality," which many saw as a direct criticism of Xiaomi's design approach and further fueled the ongoing debate.
Several netizens playfully applauded Lei Jun for "bringing Ferrari to the masses." This buzz, surprisingly, helped Ferrari's online visibility in the republic, trailing only the Xiaomi YU7, Deepal S09, and Xiaomi SU7.
Some internet users even pointed out resemblances between the Purosangue and the 2016 Mazda CX-4. Plus, people often call the Toyota Crown Sport the "Japanese Ferrari" for its similar look. All these comparisons led to some funny theories online, with people wondering if Mazda actually kicked off the design trend for today's sporty EVs.
