- Hydrogen Refuelling Facility In Batu Kawa Undergoing Testing
Sarawak has kicked off testing at its first green hydrogen refuelling station, located at the PETROS Multifuel Station in Batu Kawa, marking a major step in the state’s clean energy push.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the hydrogen is produced at Darul Hana and transported to Batu Kawa. The station also supports electric, petrol, and hydrogen-powered vehicles.
Dr Sim noted that full operations are pending final approval from the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) in Kuala Lumpur.
He added that SEDC Energy (SEDCE), which leads the state’s hydrogen drive, continues to develop the infrastructure despite it not being profitable yet.
“These hydrogen refuelling points are crucial for SEDCE’s pilot projects and ongoing improvements. Right now, hydrogen-powered vehicles are mostly commercial units under trial runs,” he said in a Facebook post.
Dr Sim personally tested the station by refuelling a Toyota Mirai with 2kg of hydrogen in just three minutes, enough for roughly 280km of range. A full 5kg tank can take the car up to 700km.
He also clarified that the vehicles weren’t bought.
“The Mirai was gifted by UMW Toyota to the Sarawak Premier and his deputies as a token of appreciation for our green energy efforts,” Dr Sim said.
Sarawak's first multi-fuel station opened in Darul Hana in April 2022, three years after the plan was first announced.
In January 2023, the state became the first in Malaysia to receive five second-generation Toyota Mirai hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles, four for SEDC Energy, and one for Premier Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.
