The Selangor Road Transport Department (JPJ) has seized 19 lorries found carrying loads up to 50% over the allowed limit during its Perang Lebih Muatan op, held from Oct 14 to earlier this week.

Selangor JPJ director Azrin Borhan said officers checked more than 29,000 vehicles statewide during the operation.

“We are committed to conducting this operation daily to ensure that heavy vehicle drivers and operators comply with the law

“The laws and guidelines in place are to protect all road users, including the lorry drivers themselves, and must be strictly followed,” he told Harian Metro.

A total of 14,078 summonses were issued, mostly for technical offences (1,743 cases). Other common violations included driving without a Goods Driving Licence (1,122 cases), no Competent Driving Licence (1,017), expired road tax (1,121), and overloading (566).

Azrin stressed that JPJ will keep up regular enforcement to ensure lorry operators follow safety rules and avoid endangering others on the road.

Meanwhile, Transport Minister Anthony Loke made it clear in Parliament that the government won’t entertain any negotiations with industry players caught breaking the law.

“When strict enforcement action is taken, there will certainly be pushback from the industry. This is normal. But the fact is, they know that the practice of overloading has been around for a long time.

“They actually want us to negotiate with them, which I see as challenging the government’s authority. They committed an offence and then asked for negotiations.

"I told them, forget it. There will be no negotiations. Law enforcement will continue,” he stated.

Loke stressed that road safety remains a top priority and warned that repeat offenders could have their permits suspended or revoked.
