Horse Powertrain Reveals New Compact Hybrid System for EV Platforms

The shift toward zero-emission mobility continues to build momentum, but the transition won’t be uniform across the globe. As Horse Powertrain CEO Matias Giannini previously noted, markets develop at different speeds, and customer needs vary widely. 

That context gives weight to Horse Powertrain’s latest move. The Renault–Geely joint venture has unveiled its “Future Hybrid System,” a compact powertrain designed to slot into existing EV platforms with minimal changes. The system was first presented in Shanghai in early 2025 before receiving further refinement for its appearance at the IAA in Munich.

The new architecture packages the engine, gearbox, electric motors and power electronics into a tight space. Two versions are planned: a 740 mm P1+P3 layout aimed at performance, and a 650 mm P2 configuration for smaller applications. Both work with a 1.5-litre 4-cyl engine and a dedicated hybrid gearbox.

By reducing front overhang by about 150 mm, the powertrain can be fitted directly onto the subframe of an existing EV. Automakers won’t need major bodywork changes or production-line reengineering, which shortens development time and lowers cost.

The system supports both plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and range-extended (REEV) setups, with the ability to deliver front or all-wheel drive propulsion even in compact cars. It also maintains EV-style front-end components, including HVAC modules and PFAS-free air-conditioning systems.

Fuel flexibility is another major pillar. The setup can run on gasoline, E85 ethanol, M100 methanol and synthetic fuels. A three-cylinder variant under development will shrink the package even further, opening the door for smaller vehicle applications.

Horse Powertrain, formed through the merger of Geely’s Aurobay and Renault’s Horse Technology divisions now operates 17 manufacturing sites and five R&D centres, supported by around 19,000 employees worldwide. Its customer portfolio spans Renault Group, Geely Auto, Volvo Cars, Nissan and Malaysia’s own Proton.
