Proton officially opened the Proton Tech Showcase 2025 earlier today with a press preview session. The expo opens publicly from Friday, Dec 5 and runs until Sunday, Dec 7.

National automaker Proton held a special press preview of its Proton Tech Showcase 2025 earlier today. This mini tech expo opens to the public this week from Friday, Dec 5, and runs until Sunday, Dec 7, at the Proton Centre of Excellence (COE), Shah Alam.

As noted, one of the biggest headliners here is the upcoming new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant of the Proton e.MAS 7. A camouflaged prototype is being shown, complemented by separate, standalone displays of its key PHEV components.

We sized up said prototype and components showcase earlier today. From what we can garner, the e.MAS 7 PHEV – as it’s still unofficially dubbed as – looks mighty promising. If you’re planning to see it up close for yourself, here’s what you can expect.

One of the biggest headlines of the Proton Tech Showcase 2025 is this display of the upcoming Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV complemented by standalone displays of its key components.

Similar Looks As BEV With Minor Difference

Look closely past the camouflage and you’ll see the e.MAS 7 PHEV largely mirrors the styling of its battery electric (BEV) twin mentioned. There are minor differences like the adoption of regular door handles instead flushed ones brimmed in the BEV version.

Different too are the front and rear bumper designs, the former now housing grille intake openings for the powertrain’s combustion (ICE) half. Distinctively different in this PHEV offshoot too are its all-LED headlights and full-width taillight plus lightbar combination.

Look past the camouflage and you'll note the e.MAS 7 PHEV sports a slew of minor design tweaks over its BEV twin. it's also slightly larger in overall size.

As for rolling stock, it appears that the e.MAS 7 PHEV also gains a distinctively different two-tone 19-inch multispoke design as opposed to the ‘aero’ styled units brimmed in the e.MAS 7 BEV version. Otherwise, everything else remains relatively identical to the BEV version noted.

For dimensions, the e.MAS 7 PHEV sits 4,740 MM long with a 2,755 MM wheelbase, 1,905 MM wide and 1,685 MM tall. In other words, this PHEV redux sits 125 MM longer with a 5 MM wheelbase stretch, 4 MM wider and 15 MM taller versus its BEV twin.

Unfortunately, locked doors and darkened windows kept prying eyes away from seeing what's inside. Insiders at PRO-NET however tells us it's identical to the BEV version.

You Can’t See Inside… Yet

Unfortunately, locked doors and heavily tinted windows kept prying eyes away from viewing this prototype’s cabin. However, we can confirm that this is a right-hand-drive (RHD) unit, thus explaining sightings of it undergoing trials on public roads lately.

No surprise if the innards of the e.MAS 7 PHEV again largely mirror its BEV twin as how the exterior does. Do also expect minor styling changes here to accommodate PHEV-specific additions like added physical control and a revised user interface.

As for key hardware, Carz.com.my understands the FlyMe Auto-powered 15.4-inch central infotainment touchscreen and 8.8-inch digital instrumentation displays will all be retained. Expect changes in their respective interfaces to accommodate the PHEV heart.

Notably, besides the camouflaged prototype, Proton have also readied standalone showcases of key components of the e.MAS 7 PHEV.

NordThor 2.0 PHEV Powertrain

What sets the e.MAS 7 PHEV apart lies underneath, which is where you’ll find the NordThor 2.0 PHEV powertrain setup developed by partners Geely.

Mechanically, this package pairs a 1.5-litre 4-cyl naturally aspirated 4-cyl petrol engine rated at 111 PS and 136 Nm with a pair (two) of 11-in-1 e-motors and a dedicated hybrid transmission (E-DHT), as well as a smaller 19.09 kWh Geely Aegis Short Blade battery pack.

This is effectively the NordThor 2.0 PHEV powertrain tech developed by Geely that powers the Galaxy Starship 7 - what the e.MAS 7 PHEV essentially underpins.

Combined, there’s a claimed 218 PS and 262 Nm available on tap allowing 0-100 km/h dashes in 7.5 secs. Up to 120 KM of electric-only driving plus a combined petrol-electric range of up to 1,420 KM were touted, both based on CLTC standards though.

Said battery pack detailed accepts DC fast-charging inputs of up to 36 kW, and the combustion mill draws fuel from a 51-litre fuel tank brimmed in the chassis.

Insiders at PRO-NET tells us that there's a possibility of the e.MAS 7 PHEV being introduced with two variant, with one packing a smaller 8.5 kWh battery pack instead.

Coming Soon, Possibly With Two Variants

Whilst parent company Proton remains tight-lipped, insiders at its PRO-NET subsidiary – the arm responsible for overseeing the Proton e.MAS brand – has clued us in on a few things regarding the e.MAS 7 PHEV.

Firstly, whilst final product plans aren’t firmed up yet, there is a possibility that the e.MAS 7 PHEV could see two variants offered. Separating both are their respective battery sizes and subsequent range and performance tied to which.

Our best guess is that the Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV could officially launch sometime in 1H 2026, but don't take our word on that just yet...

We’ve detailed the variant with the larger battery option, but not the second smaller choice. Given what partners Geely have done in China, we could also see a version of the e.MAS 7 PHEV packing a smaller 8.5 kWh battery pack being introduced as well.

Little is known about the latter, but what is certain is that Proton is poised to introduce this petrol-electric redux of the e.MAS 7, perhaps within the first half (1H) of next year (2026). However, don’t take our word on this just yet.
