JMEV SC-01 Unveiled as China’s All-Electric Answer to Lightweight European Coupes

The new JMEV SC-01 has been unveiled as China’s all-electric answer to European lightweight coupes.

Performance EVs are often lauded for their blistering straight-line numbers, but most enthusiasts said the fun dies rather quickly, especially around tight bends and twisties. But those perceptions might be going away in the future, as China’s JMEV has just unveiled its new lightweight electric sportscar that will take on the European lightweight giants, known as SC-01.

Backed by tech giant Xiaomi and Chinese start-up Tianjin Gongjiangpai Auto Technology (TGAT), JMEV has confirmed that the SC-01 will be heading to the European market, with 1,000 units already planned to be assembled in Italy.

At one glance, the SC-01 looks like a pretty promising project, featuring a classic wedge sportscar design made famous by several iconic Italian models like the Lancia Stratos, with some modern and EV-specific design touches peppered around its compact body.

How compact, you ask? According to JMEV, the SC-01 is only 4,106 mm long, thus making it smaller than some of Europe’s current lightweight sportscars like the Alpine A110 and the Porsche 718 Cayman, to name a few.

Thanks to its smaller footprint, the SC-01 is also quite a lightweight vehicle, tipping the scale at only 1,365 kg—making it 520 kg lighter than the MG Cyberster and about 40 kg lighter than the Porsche Cayman GTS. Part of this, besides its small size, is due to the aluminium frame exclusively made for the SC-01.

Part of the diet plan for the SC-01 is the rather simplistic and borderline bare-bones interior, which is rather peculiar to see in a modern Chinese EV. There are no massive screens and fancy ambient lights to ‘distract’ you from driving inside here, where instead you’ll get a single digital driver’s display, a three-spoke steering wheel, plus several physical controls and dials.

As for its powertrain setup, the SC-01 is powered by two electric motors that produce a combined output of 429 hp (320 kW) and 560 Nm of twist, which is good enough to propel this lightweight coupe from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.9 seconds. Juice is provided by a 60 kWh battery pack that JMEV claims is good for up to 500 km of range, at least according to the more lenient CLTC standards.

Exact European pricing for the new JMEV SC-01 has yet to be determined, although CarNewsChina reported that it will be somewhere around the CNY 500,000 (RM287,118) mark. For context, the SC-01 is retailed at just CNY 229,800 (RM131,959) in its native Chinese market, meaning that the European might have to pay more than twice as much for this sleek EV coupe.
