0-100 In 5.5 Seconds?! The Upgraded BYD Atto 3 Premium Just Became A RM138k Pocket Rocket

For years, BYD Atto 3 has been proudly embraced as the king of practical daily commuting. But with the arrival of the new facelift, BYD Malaysia has completely rewritten the script.
The local lineup now gives us the entry-level Ultra (RM125,800) and a top-spec Premium (RM138,800). If you take a closer look under the skin of that Premium variant, you'll realize it has ditched its modest commuter roots to become a fierce, high-tech pocket rocket built for the European market.
The 5.5-Second Shock: Obliterating The Family Car Stereotype
The previous Atto 3 was perfectly content pulling a respectable zero-to-100 km/h time of 7.3 seconds. It was punchy enough for city overtaking, but it wasn't going to turn any heads at a stoplight.
The new Premium variant completely tears up that script. BYD has ripped out the front-wheel-drive motor and swapped in a massive rear-wheel-drive (RWD) Evo motor engineered for the European market.
Look at how the performance numbers stack up:
Let that sink in for a second. Slicing nearly two whole seconds off a century sprint is a monumental leap. At 5.5 seconds, this RM138k family crossover accelerates faster than many entry-level continental sports sedans, classic hot hatches, and pretty much every standard ICE vehicle on Malaysian roads.
It's Not Just Fast In A Straight Line, The Handling Gets A Major Rethink

If you’ve ever driven the pre-facelift front-wheel-drive Atto 3 aggressively, you might have noticed how easily the front tires could chirp under instant electric torque, occasionally accompanied by a slight tug on the steering wheel (torque steer).

2025 BYD Atto 3 Ultra
By migrating the electric motor to the rear axle, the Premium variant completely changes how the vehicle behaves under heavy acceleration. Because the front wheels are now exclusively responsible for steering while the rear wheels handle the power, those front-wheel traction struggles are physically eliminated, resulting in a much cleaner, more predictable steering feel.
To cope with the massive 313 PS output, the Premium variant gets a major structural upgrade:
- Advanced 5-Link Rear Suspension: Swapping out the old four-link layout, this new setup keeps the car completely planted, giving you significantly sharper cornering stability and less body roll when navigating winding trunk roads.
- Turbine Roller Wheels: Wrapped in 18-inch grey-finished turbine alloys, it gets a meaner, more aggressive stance to match its newfound muscle.
The 800V "Cheat Code": Lightning-Fast Charging For Road Trips
A faster car is useless on a long-distance balik kampung trip if you have to spend an hour waiting at a highway charging station. This is where the Premium variant drops its second major upgrade: an 800-volt electrical architecture.
While the base Ultra variant maxes out at 110 kW DC fast charging, the Premium variant can handle up to a blistering 220 kW DC fast charging.

Even though the Premium packs a much larger 74.88 kWh Blade battery (granting a healthy real-world WLTP range of 510 km or 600 km NEDC), plugging into a high-powered charger will juice up the battery from 10% to 80% in just 25 minutes. You will barely have enough time to order a mamak dinner and check your phone before the car is fully ready to blast all the way from KL to Penang.
A Much More Mature, Premium Interior Space

The original Atto 3’s interior was famous for pushing design boundaries, maybe a little too far for drivers who preferred a traditional, clean luxury cabin. Recognizing this, the designers went back to the drawing board for the 2026 update.

They’ve completely quieted down the loud fitness elements, transforming the cabin into a sleek, sophisticated environment that feels significantly more high-end than its price tag suggests.

The cabin has received a massive aesthetic glow-up:
- Smooth Surfaces: The bizarre "ribbed muscle-vein" dashboard paneling has been completely smoothed over with classy, soft-touch materials and premium stitching.
- Mercedes-Style Shifter: The bulky, awkward "kettlebell" center console gear lever is gone. It has been replaced by a sleek steering column-mounted stalk, freeing up valuable real estate in the middle console for dual smartphone holders.
- Chilled Wireless Charging: One of those slots features a rapid 50W wireless charger equipped with integrated cooling vents, meaning your phone can fast-charge while running Waze without turning into a molten brick under the hot Malaysian sun.
- The Screen Got Usefully Bigger: While the center screen no longer rotates, the driver's instrument cluster has jumped from a tiny 5-inch display to a beautifully readable 8.8-inch digital panel, making navigation telemetry vastly easier to track at a glance.
The Ultimate Sleeper Deal of 2026?
At RM138,800, the BYD Atto 3 Premium presents a fascinating paradox. On the outside, it looks like a sleek, sensible, ultra-safe family crossover loaded with a 7-airbag safety shield and full level-2 ADAS driver assistance.

But stomp your right foot down, and it unleashes a 313 horsepower rear-wheel-drive punch that will leave unsuspecting sports cars eating its dust.
If you are looking for an everyday commuter that can easily handle the family duties but secretly packs enough firepower to make your morning drive genuinely exciting, this upgraded pocket rocket might just be the best value-for-money performance deal in the country right now.
