Proton e.Mas 5

Highly anticipated, Proton’s second fully electrified offering, the all-new Proton e.MAS 5, officially launched in Malaysia.

A Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV), the B-segment (hatchback) runner underpins Geely’s Global Intelligent New Energy Architecture (GEA) platform.

Locally assembled (CKD – Perak), available via PRO-NET (Proton New Energy Technology) are two variants (Prime – RM59,800, Premium – RM72,800).

Prices (OTR, w/o insurance) cover vehicle (six years/unlimited mileage) and EV battery-component (eight years/160,000 km) warranties.

Single-tone (Prime) and dual-tone (Premium: Black roof) exterior colours (Prime, Premium: Moonstone White, Graphite Silver, Slate Grey – Premium: Marble Cream, Quartz Rose).

Interior (exterior colour dependent) colours (Flint Grey: Moonstone White, Graphite Silver, Slate Grey – Alabaster White: Marble Cream, Quartz Rose).

The all-new e.MAS 5 has a rounded and tiered dashboard, linked to a high-rising-floating centre console (crystal gear selector, wireless charger, armrest, storages).

Soft-/hard-touched (dash, steering wheel, centre console, doors), it sees two colour schemes (Flint Grey: Prime, Premium – Alabaster White: Premium) with contrast trims (Aluminium, Gloss Black).

Equipped are driver/central displays (instrument cluster, infotainment) and air-conditioning vents (rectangular).

Inclusively, the layout is ergonomic (functional), with accessibilities purposefully arranged (driver-oriented, user-friendly).

Installed is an 8.8-inch HD TFT-LCD (Thin-Film Transistor-Liquid Crystal Display) fully digital (Multi-Information Display – MID) driver display (instrument cluster).

Features are Bluetooth, navigation/media, Proton voice command (two-zone – ‘Hi e.MAS’: English, Bahasa Melayu), Proton e.MAS App (phone app control – remote control, vehicle status, charging stations, functions), customisable interface (drive mode dependent) and vehicle telematics.

Comfortable, the interior sees leatherette (Prime, Premium) upholstery in two colour schemes (Flint Grey: Prime, Premium – Alabaster White: Premium).

The front gets manual-operated (driver-passenger-multi-way-adjust) bolstered seats. The rear gets a manual-operated (60:40 split-fold) bolstered bench.

Included are armrests (front – centre console, rear – centre seat fold-out), headrests (front, rear) and under-seat storage (rear: 28 litres).

A five-seater (e-hatchback), the cabin offers generous space with comfortable seatings, providing ample interior mobility for the occupants (front, rear). 

Sufficient head, shoulder and leg rooms.

Mounted is a two-spoke-flat-bottom steering wheel. Single-tone (Prime) and dual-tone (Premium) leatherette (interior colour dependent) with contrast trims (Aluminium, Gloss Black).

Features are multi-switches (Bluetooth, media, voice command, vehicle telematics) and column adjustments (tilt, telescopic).

Aiding the drive is an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system (turning radius: 4.95 m) and G-Traction Control System (GTCS).

Practical storage areas. E.g., pockets (side doors, seat backs), centre console spaces (partitioned, caverned, retractable, under-stowage), under-seat storage (rear: 28 litres), a glove box and a hidden boot space (under-boot floor).

Included is a front trunk (frunk: 70 litres).

Provided are four cup holders (two: front, rear) and four bottle holders (one: side doors).

Equipped are two (Prime: one-front, one-rear) and three (Premium: two-front, one-rear) USB ports, one 12 V socket (one: front) and one wireless charger (centre console).

Included is a Vehicle-to-Load (V2L – 3.3 kW) function for powering of external devices.

Accessing (Premium) its electric-powered (remote/key fob, interior button, tailgate button) tailgate, opens to 375 litres (rear seats up) and 1,320 litres (rear seats down) of load capacities.

Weighing in at 1,320 kg (Prime) and 1,305 kg (Premium), the all-new e.MAS 5 measures at 4,135 mm long, 1,805 mm wide, 1,580 mm tall and with a wheelbase spanning 2,650 mm.

Sleek and sporty, it parades a roundly shaped exterior, emphasised by seamlessly aerodynamic and clean-cut contours.

The front-end sees a mildly formed bonnet (raised sides), rounded quarter panels (raised fenders) and a rounded bumper (lower-central vented, corner cutouts, ‘Proton’ emblem).

Accentuations, body clad (Black: bumper, fenders, side sills), body trims (Black: vent, bumper corner cutout inserts, window surrounds – Black-Chrome: ‘Proton’ emblem), side mirrors (Black arms: Prime – Black full: Premium), bumper corner cutout/lower side door/beltline strips (Chrome: Premium) and contrast roof (Black: Premium).

Borderline bulbous, it continues the roundly shaped profile, emphasised by symmetrically flowing surfaces and seamlessly cut lines.

The rear-end sees a mildly dipped roofline (roof-edge spoiler, shark fin antenna), a roundly upright tailgate (‘Proton’/’e.MAS 5’ scripts), rounded quarter panels (raised fenders) and a covered bumper (exhaust-omitted).

Accentuations, body clad (Black: bumper, fenders, side sills), body trims (Black: roof-edge spoiler, shark fin antenna, window surrounds – Chrome: ‘Proton’/’e.MAS 5’ scripts), lower side door/beltline/foglamp strips (Chrome: Premium) and contrast roof (Black: Premium).

Angular rounded, the headlamps are framed softly pointed and inward-tilted. Installed are bulb (Prime) and LED (Premium) units.

Features are automatic On/Off/high-/low-beam (Premium), Intelligent High Beam Control (IHBC – Premium), Daytime Running Lights (DRL – LED), welcome/leaving lights and sequential turn signals (LED).

Angular rounded, the tail lamps are framed softly pointed with narrow wraparound edges. Installed are full LED units.

Features are automatic On/Off (Premium), welcome/leaving lights and sequential turn signals (LED). Included is a high-mounted brake light (spoiler integrated – LED).

The side mirrors (single-tone: Prime – dual-tone: Premium) are electronic-powered (auto-fold, adjust), with turn signals (LED) and blind-spot indicators (Blind Spot Detection – BSD).

Mounted is a set of ventilated (front) and solid (rear) disc brakes.

Aiding the drive are an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) with Auto Brake Hold system and a Brake Energy Recuperation system (regenerative braking).

Fitted are sets of 15-inch (Prime) and 16-inch (Premium) alloy rims, wrapped in 205/65 R15 (Prime: front, rear) and 205/60 R16 (Premium: front, rear) Linglong Comfort Master (Prime, Premium) tyres.

The all-new e.MAS 5 (variant-specific) features the following suit of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

Grouped are Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC – Premium), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB – Premium), Forward Collision Warning (FCW – Premium), Emergency Brake Assist (EBA – Premium), Lane Departure Warning (LDW – Premium), Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR – Premium), Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Lane Change Warning (LCW), Rear-Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Rear Collision Warning (RCW), Door Opening Warning (DOW) and Front Vehicle Departure Alert (FDA – Premium).

Others include Surround View Camera (SVC: 360-degree, 3D display – Premium), Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), G-Traction Control System (GTCS), Anti-Rolling Programme (ARP), Hill Hold Assist (HHA), Hill Descent Control (HDC), Cruise Control (CC – Premium), Intelligent High Beam Control (IHBC – Premium), Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) with Auto Brake Hold and Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

Passive safety includes six (driver-passenger, front sides, front-rear curtains) airbags, seat belts (reminders, pre-tensioners, anchors), ISOFIX (two: outer-rear seats), parking sensors (three: rear), parking cameras (Prime: reverse – Premium: 360-degree), rear-view mirrors (exterior: BSD), automatic-door locks (speed-sensing, central-locking), automatic wipers (rain-sensing, intermittent), automatic headlamps (On/Off/high-/low-beam – Premium), automatic windows (anti-pinch, one-touch up/down), impact beams and anti-theft system (security alarm, immobiliser).

Selectable are three drive modes (ECO, COMFORT, SPORT). 

Installed is a 14.6-inch HD touchscreen central display (infotainment), running on ACO Tech’s ATLAS Auto Operating System (AAOS: Android 10 – quad-core processor, 6 GB RAM, 64 GB storage).

Features are AM/FM radio, USB, Bluetooth, 4G/WiFi/WiFi hotspot, navigation/media/weather, Proton voice command (two-zone – ‘Hi e.MAS’: English, Bahasa Melayu), Spotify, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto (wireless), Proton e.MAS App (phone app control – remote control, vehicle status, charging stations, functions), vehicle telematics, customisable interface (drive mode dependent), App Store and Over-The-Air (OTA) system updates.

Entertainment is channelled via a standard sound system (six speakers).

The all-new e.MAS 5 (Prime, Premium) underpins an all-electric e-powertrain (BEV) with variant-specific outputs.

Nestled (rear-mounted: Prime, Premium) is a single-electric motor (11-IN-1 integrated-e-motor: Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor – PMSM) setup (Prime: 58 kW/79 PS, 130 Nm – Premium: 85 kW/116 PS, 150 Nm).

Churning the setups is a single-speed automatic transmission.

Power is rooted to the rear (Prime, Premium) wheels, via a Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) system.

0 to 50 km/h acceleration is done in 4.4 secs (Prime) and 3.9 secs (Premium). 

Powering the e-motors is a Lithium-Ion (LFP – Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery (Prime: 30.12 kWh – Premium: 40.16 kWh) battery, enabling a driving range (WLTP/NEDC) of 225 km/285 km (Prime) and 325 km/395 km (Premium).

DC charging (CCS2 – Prime: 53 kW, Premium: 71 kW), takes 21 mins for a 30% to 80% State of Charge (SoC). 

AC charging (Type 2 – Prime, Premium: 6.6 kW), takes 4.3 hours (Prime) and 5.9 hours (Premium) for a 10% to 100% SoC.

Included is a Vehicle-to-Load (V2L – 3.3 kW) function for powering of external devices.

Underpinned is Geely’s Global Intelligent New Energy Architecture (GEA) platform. Propping-up the e-chassis is a suspension setup of MacPherson strut (front) and multi-link (rear).

Ride comfortability feels flexible and firm at the same time. The e-hatchback delivers a comfortable and light steering feel with smooth overall electric performance.

Good sound insulation with most of the NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) aspects accounted for. The ride is quiet, refined and the road noise is mostly muted.

The all-new Proton e.MAS 5 exudes a sporty and energy filled outlook. A sleek design language that features aerodynamically soft and seamless body contours.

Interior-wise, its borderline premium-featured layout, provides a sense of comfort and easy connectivity to the occupants.
