Smart #5

Long-awaited, the latest and third addition to the Smart family, the all-new Smart #5, officially launched in Malaysia.

The C-segment (mid-size crossover SUV) Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) underpins Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture 3 (SEA3/PMA2+) platform.

Fully imported (CBU – China), available via PRO-NET (Proton New Energy Technology) are two variants (Premium – RM199,800, Brabus – RM249,800).

Prices (OTR, w/o insurance) cover a vehicle warranty (four years, unlimited mileage), an EV battery warranty (eight years/200,000 km), an EV component warranty (eight years/150,000 km), a spare parts warranty (two years, unlimited mileage) and roadside assistance (24/7).

Exterior (contrast roof: Eclipse Black) colours (Premium: Meta Black, Cyber Silver Metallic, Pulsar Ruby, Saturn Beige Matte – Brabus: Meta Black, Digital White Metallic, Atom Grey Matte). Interior colours (Premium: Shadow Black – Brabus: Shadow Black-Red).

The all-new #5 gets an oblong-shaped dashboard, linked to a flat-low-rising centre console (armrest, storages, dual wireless charger, cooler storage).

Soft-/hard-touched (dash, centre console, steering wheel, doors), it sees variant-specific upholsteries (Premium: Nappa leather – Brabus: Nappa leather-Alcantara), contrast trims (Premium: Oak Wood, Aluminium – Brabus: Carbon Fibre, Aluminium) and colour schemes (Premium: Shadow Black – Brabus: Shadow Black-Red).

Equipped are screen displays (driver, centre, passenger: instrument cluster, centre infotainment, passenger infotainment), raising speaker (top-centre), air-conditioning vents (corners: semicircle – centre: rectangular), an ‘Ambient Lighting+’ system (256 colours – rhythmic), sport pedal (Brabus: Aluminium) and Brabus emblems (Brabus).

Inclusively, the layout is ergonomic (functional) with accessibilities purposefully arranged (driver-centric, passenger-oriented).

Installed is a 10.25-inch TFT LCD fully digital (Multi-Information Display – MID) driver display (instrument cluster) with a 25.6-inch Head-Up Display (W-HUD).

Features are vehicle telematics, Bluetooth, navigation, Voice Recognition, media, Hello Smart App (vehicle status monitoring, vehicle locate/tracking) and customisable interface (drive mode dependent).

Luxurious, the interior sees variant-specific upholsteries (Premium: Nappa leather – Brabus: Nappa leather-Dinamica microfibre) and colour schemes (Premium: Shadow Black – Brabus: Shadow Black-Red) with Brabus embroidery (Brabus: headrests).

A five-seater (mid-size e-crossover SUV), the cabin offers generous space, providing comfortable seatings with ample interior mobility for the occupants (front, rear).

Mounted is a three-spoke-flat-bottom sport steering wheel. Leather (Premium) and leather-Alcantara (Brabus) in one (Shadow Black) colour scheme with contrast trims (Aluminium, illuminated Smart/Brabus emblems) and stitching (Brabus: Red).

Features are multi-switches (Bluetooth, media, voice recognition, vehicle telematics), column adjustments (tilt, telescopic) and column gear selector (right stalk).

Drive is aided by an Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) system.

Practical storage areas. E.g., pockets (side doors, seatbacks), centre console spaces (partitioned, caverned, retractable, under-stowage, armrest cooler), glove box and a hidden boot space (under-boot floor).

Provided are four cup holders (two: front – two: rear) and four bottle holders (one: side doors).

Included is a Vehicle-To-Load (V2L – 3.3 kW) function for powering of external appliances.

Accessing its electric-powered (handsfree: remote/key fob, tailgate button, interior button, Hello Smart App digital key, kick sensor) tailgate, opens to 630 litres (rear seats up) and 1,530 litres (rear seats down) of load capacities (under boot-floor storage: 110 litres). 

Included is a front trunk (frunk – Premium: 72 litres, Brabus: 47 litres).

Weighing in at 2,260 kg (Premium) and 2,378 kg (Brabus), the all-new #5 stands at 4,705 mm in length, 1,920 mm in width, 1,705 mm in height and with a wheelbase spanning 2,900 mm.

Distinctively electric, it exudes a solidly boxy exterior, emphasised by symmetrically aligned and straightly cut contours.

The front-end sees a squared bonnet (Smart script), muscular quarter panels (flared fenders) and a squared bumper (Premium: DRL cluster, standard grille, standard corner vents – Brabus: DRL cluster, Brabus grille, Brabus corner vents, lip kit).

Accentuations, body clad (Premium, Brabus: Black), body trims (Premium: Black, Silver, Chrome – Brabus: Black, Red, Chrome), side mirrors (Premium: body-colour-Black – Brabus: Black-Red), roof (Premium, Brabus: Eclipse Black) and Brabus emblems (Brabus).

Robustly electric, it continues the solidly boxy profile, emphasised by horizontally aligned and clean-cut contours.

The rear-end sees a straight cut roofline (Premium: shark fin antenna, standard roof-edge spoiler – Brabus: shark fin antenna, Brabus roof-edge aero-spoiler), muscular quarter panels (flared fenders), an upright tailgate (lightbar, Smart script) and a squared bumper (Premium: covered, exhaust-omitted, standard bumper guard – Brabus: covered, exhaust-omitted, Brabus bumper guard).

Accentuations, body clad (Premium, Brabus: Black), body trims (Premium: Black, Silver, Chrome – Brabus: Black, Red, Chrome), D-pillars (Premium, Brabus: illuminated Smart emblem), roof (Premium, Brabus: Eclipse Black) and Brabus emblems (Brabus).

Boxy and slim, the head lamps (darkened) are framed square with a full width connecting lightbar. Installed are full LED (CyberSparks LED+ Matrix) units.

Features are capsule Daytime Running Lights (DRL – LED), automatic On/Off/high-/low-beam/cornering/levelling, Adaptive High Beam Assist (AHBA), welcome/leaving lights and sequential turn signals (LED).

Boxy and slim, the tail lamps (darkened) are framed square with a full width connecting lightbar. Installed are full LED units.

Features are automatic On/Off, sequential turn signals (LED) and welcome/leaving lights. Included is a high-mounted stop light (spoiler integrated).

The side mirrors (Premium: body-colour-Black – Brabus: Black-Red) are electronic-powered (auto-fold, adjust, reverse-tilt). 

Features are sequential turn signals (LED), blind-spot indicators (Blind Spot Monitor – BLIS), automatic-dimming, heating, memory and puddle lights.

Installed is a setup of ventilated (front) and solid (rear) disc brakes with coloured (Red) callipers (Brabus). 

Drive is aided by an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) with Auto Brake Hold system and a Brake Energy Recuperation (regenerative braking – One-Pedal Driving) system.

Aerodynamically designed, mounted are sets of 20-inch (Premium: ‘Sundial’ – Silver-Black) and 21-inch (Brabus: ‘Monoblock’ – Black-Silver) alloy rims.

The sets are rubbered up in 255/45 R20 (Premium: front, rear) and 255/40 R21 (Brabus: front, rear) Continental EcoContact 7 (Premium, Brabus) tyres.

The all-new #5 gets a comprehensive suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

Part of a dual screen setup, installed are 13-inch centre and 13-inch passenger AMOLED touchscreen displays (infotainment), running on ‘Crystal Prism’ interface (AMD V2000 chip – Unreal Engine 3D graphics).

Entertainment is channelled via the Sennheiser Signature (Dolby Atmos technology) premium sound system (20 speakers, one dash-centre raising speaker).

Cocooned in the all-new #5 is an all-electric e-powertrain (BEV) with variant-specific setups.

First e-powertrain (Premium) is a single-electric motor (rear-mounted: Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor – PMSM) setup (267 kW/363 PS, 373 Nm).

Second e-powertrain (Brabus) is a dual-electric motor (front-rear-mounted: Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor – PMSM) setup (475 kW/646 PS, 710 Nm).

Fused to the setup is a single-speed automatic transmission (column gear selector: right stalk).

Power is rooted to the rear (Premium) and to all four (Brabus) wheels, via a Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) system and an All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system.

Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is done in 6.5 secs (Premium) and 3.8 secs (Brabus). Top speed is electronically capped at 200 km/h (Premium) and 210 km/h (Brabus).

Underpinned is Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture 3 (SEA3/PMA2+) platform (800 V).

Juicing-up the e-motors is a Ternary Lithium (NMC – Nickel Manganese Cobalt) battery (Premium, Brabus: 100 kWh), enabling a total driving range (WLTP) of 590 km (Premium) and 540 km (Brabus).

AC charging (Type 2: 22 kW), takes 4.5 hours (Premium, Brabus) for a 10% to 80% State of Charge (SoC). 

DC charging (CCS2: 400 kW), takes 15 mins (Premium, Brabus) for a 10% to 80% SoC.

Ride comfortability feels flexible and firm at the same time. The vehicle delivers a connected steering feel, with a linear and balanced weighing at all speeds.

Overall, it is spacious and comfortable, and the ride quality is satisfactory. Safe and suitable for a daily driver.

Good sound insulation, covering all the NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) aspects. The cabin is serene, with the tyre, road and wind noises mostly hindered.

The all-new Smart #5 is a great daily e-SUV, providing an all-rounder build with its all-electric powertrain and total interior comfort.

Primarily, it offers a spacious cabin, enveloping a premium interior with advanced connectivity, comfort and plenty of safety features.

Next, it has an engaging driving dynamic with a selection between two e-powertrain setups (BEV: single-motor, dual-motor).

Ultimately, its build quality is excellent, and with its electrifying exterior demeanour, the all-new #5 is surely a Smart choice for Malaysians to consider.
