Finally a New Turbocharged Forester, but It’s No XT.
The Subaru Forester is one of those nameplates that have ‘grown up’ over the years. From being the WRX wagon on stilts of yesteryears to the full-fledged school run SUVs of today, it has grown broader in terms of physical size and market appeal.
The SK-series Forester is a truly capable family SUV. The angular styling may not be to everyone’s liking, but it is more than offset by the brilliant Subaru Global Platform and smooth revving FB series boxer engine. Coupled with a spacious interior and EyeSight safety system, it’s a car that offers the family man peace of mind.
While its 2.0L naturally-aspirated boxer engine is smooth and revvy, the output is not exactly headline grabbing. The current gen Forester is an SUV that’s begging for more power to be channeled through its smart Symmetrical All Wheel Drive (SAWD) system.
In Malaysia, the car is only available with one engine option. Overseas, there are 2 more options in the form of a 2.5L naturally aspirated boxer engine and a 2.0L hybrid power plant. There was no turbocharged power plant available for the SK-series Forester - until now.

Subaru has introduced the Forester Sport with an 1.8L turbocharged engine borrowed from the new Levorg. Codenamed CB18, it churns out 177hp and 300Nm, which should make it a tad faster if not as fast as the 2.5L NA version.
Would you regard the Forester Sport as the successor to the more powerful Forester XT, or are you still hoping for the WRX’s FA20F four banger?
