New Subaru Trailseeker And Face-lifted Solterra EVs Bow
Subaru revealed the Trailseeker (left) as its second EV alongside a refreshed iteration of its first EV model the Solterra (right).
Japanese automaker Subaru revealed a series of new metal earlier today in conjunction with this week’s 2025 New York Auto Show. Amongst them were two electric vehicles (EVs), one being the brand new Subaru Trailseeker and the other being the refreshed Subaru Solterra.
We’ll start with the new Trailseeker, which now stands as the Japanese marque’ second even all-electric offering after the Toyota bZ4X-based Solterra. This new model is presented as a larger, Outback-sized offering that slots above the Solterra model noted, which we’ll detail in a bit.
Details are surprisingly scant for the new Trailseeker model, but it does evidently appear to borrow heavy inspiration from the Solterra.
Technical specs and details, as well as the number of official photos issued, are surprisingly scant. In turn, this has led to a debate amongst observers about the Trailseeker’s status as an SUV or estate – it has proportions and elements of both genres present, though it does heavily borrow design cues from the Solterra.
Instead, what little details available reportedly indicates that the Trailseeker does sits 25 MM taller and 150 MM longer over the Solterra, but shares the same 211 MM ground clearance. There’s also a claimed 1,590 KG towing capacity touted.
Packing a 74.7 kWh battery pack plus a dual-motor, AWD setup, Subaru claims the Trailseeker can yield "more than" 418 KM of range on a single charge.
Underneath, the Trailseeker adopts a 74.7 kWh battery pack that juices a twin e-motor setup delivering approximately 375 HP, which in turn enables 0-60 MPH (96 KM/H) sprints in about 4.4 secs – it’s over a full second quicker here over the WRX STI sports saloon.
Whilst here, it’s worth highlighting that the dual-motor setup mentioned offers the marque’s signature X-Mode all-wheel-drive (AWD) drive mode system. Here, it boasts Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud settings, as well as both Grip Control and Downhill Assist Control.
The Trailseeker's innards pretty much mirrors what's seen in the refreshed Solterra featuring a massive 14-inch touchscreen infotainment plus dual wireless charging pads, amongst other things.
As for range, the Trailseeker has claimed ability to cover “more than” 260 miles (418 KM) on a single charge based on EPA standards. Notably, the Tesla-developed and Voltex-made North American Charging System (NACS) charging port is present here.
Inside, the Trailseeker’s cabin, much like the exterior design, borrows heavy inspiration from the Solterra. Key features primed here include a massive 14-inch touchscreen infotainment display – the largest ever fitted in any Subaru – plus dual wireless charging pads.
Notably, a Toyota redux of the Trailseeker is expected to debut sometime later this year too.
Little else was disclosed, but more details are expected once partners Toyota debuts their redux of the Trailseeker later this year. Prices weren’t announced, but Subaru confirmed North American sales will commence first early next year before Europe and the UK.
Moving to the updated 2026 model year Solterra, this facelift of the Subaru-badged twin to the Toyota bZ4X was pretty much expected. What is surprising here is seeing how Subaru arguably made a much prettier redux over the Toyota original mentioned.
Moving on to the brand's first EV, the Toyota bZ4X-based Solterra has been given a refresh for its 22065MY guise and now sports a much cleaner aesthetic.
The redesigned and cleaner-looking front end comes courtesy of a toned-down grille design flanked by slimmer new LED headlights. Notably, the black plastic claddings have all been given body-colour paint, but Subaru says two-tone exterior colour options remain available still.
Whilst the rear profile remains largely unchanged from before, it does gain fresh new Subaru script-badging on its tailgate. One last exterior change to note here is the upsized 20-inch rolling stock – these were 18-inch prior.
Key changes sees body cladding now painted in body colour, upsized 20-inch rolling stock, as well as a toned down front grille matched with slimmer LED headlights.
Apart from the revised Subaru tailgate script badge, little else has changed in the rear profile.
Inside, the changes in the cabin mirror what we’ve seen done by Toyota prior. It includes a larger new 14-inch infotainment touchscreen unit offering wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the addition of wireless charging pads as standard, upgraded USB-C charging ports, and more.
Mechanically, the standard AWD powertrain gained a stronger rear e-motor plus enhanced power distribution. The new total system output of 338 HP is a healthy bump from the previous 215 HP figure, thus explaining the quicker 0-60 MPH (97 KM/H) sprint time of under 5 secs.
Changes on board largely mirror what's seen in the Toyota bZ4X twin, which was also refreshed earlier this year.
Drivers can access Subaru’s X-Mode AWD drive mode system in this model too, which again offers Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud driving modes, as well as both Grip Control and Downhill Assist Control functions.
Subaru also claims that drive dynamics and handling have been enhanced too thanks to the revised settings dialled into both the suspension and electric power steering module – a fitting match given the power bump detailed.
For North America, the 2026 Subaru Solterra adopts the NACS charging port. It also sees its new 74.7 kWh battery pack gained improved 150 kW DC charging ability plus a newly equipped battery pre-conditioning system.
Lastly, there improvements in the battery, charging and range front to note too. It starts with a new 74.7 kWh battery pack that yields over 285 miles (459 KM) of range in between charges, marking a 25% improvement from before.
Additionally, besides the adoption of the NACS charging port, the improved 150 kW DC charging ability also grants 10-80% re-charges in just about 35 minutes. Moreover, there’s a new battery preconditioning system primed here too.
Again, no pricing details were revealed but Subaru did confirm once more that sales of the face-lifted Solterra will begin in North America starting later this year. More details are expected then too.
