Aston Martin to Carry On With ICE After 2030

According to Autoblog, British sportscar maker Aston Martin has confirmed that they will continue to make internal combustion engine cars, despite the announcement that the United Kingdom has brought forward the ban of ICE-ed cars from 2040 to 2030.

Speaking at Aston Martin CEO Lawrence Stroll said  “By 2030, 5% of business will still always be ICE. I never see it going down to zero.” He elaborated that there is “always going to be enthusiasts” for ICE cars with pockets deep enough for it.

Fans of the brand should be heartened to know that the company will continue to invest in petrol engines for years to come. He added that the company will still be using Mercedes-AMG’s engines but with in-house tuning.

“Our current AMG engines are just that: AMG engines in an Aston. With this new deal, we will have bespoke AMG engines for Aston with different outputs, torque characteristics, etc. They’ll still be AMG components, but they’ll be bespoke-manufactured in Germany,” said Stroll.

As of now, most of the brand’s cars are powered by Mercedes-AMG’s 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine. To have the full Aston Martin experience, one needs to go for the DBS Superleggera with a 5.2-litre V12 engine. A smaller 3.0-litre V6 is currently being developed.

Slightly more than a month ago, Aston Martin has renewed its partnership with Daimler, which will see the latter take up a 20% stake in the British firm. However it’s an exercise that’s catered more towards electrification efforts - Aston Martin will have access to Merc’s next-generation hybrid and electric power trains.

Aside from the United Kingdom, other countries like France, Ireland, and India are also planning to ban ICE cars in the future.
