Johor Police Starts Cracking Down on Fancy Number Plates

According to a report by Berita Harian, police in Johor will start clamping down on number plates that are not in line with specifications set by the authorities.
It’s understood that 9,985 summons were issued since January 2020 for the offence. Enforcement will begin with official vehicles of the Johor police force and other official government vehicles.
Different fonts, font sizes and kerning can make identifying number plates difficult. It is a matter not to be taken lightly, especially in identifying hit and run cases and other traffic offences. These number plates are an offence under Section 14 (4) and Section 108 (3)(F) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and Rule 6 (1) LN173/69.
We understand for the astronomical amount paid for vanity registration numbers, an additional few hundred Ringgit for an aesthetically pleasing number plate is relatively cheap in comparison. If you are of these owners, we urge you to stay at the right side of the law.
