Toyota receives multiple awards for 4th Asean NCAP Grand Prix
UMW Toyota Motors Sdn Bhd, the official distributor for Toyota vehicles in Malaysia, has bagged four ‘Excellent Awards’ at the 4th ASEAN NCAP Grand Prix Awards announced on February 16, 2021.
The four awards include Toyota brand as the Most 5-Star Brand for 2019 to 2020, and three more continuous safety improvements for the Toyota Corolla Altis, Hilux and Innova, in their respective segment.

This biannual event of the new car assessment programme for Southeast Asian Countries (aka ASEAN NCAP) has the aim at commemorating high achievers in car safety in the ASEAN region.
“Toyota is committed to continuously improving its vehicle safety technologies and performance, as part of its entire efforts toward road and traffic safety, with focus on three essential elements- vehicle (advancing safety technology), people (educating drivers, passengers and pedestrians towards traffic safety) and traffic environment (supporting safer traffic infrastructure),” said its deputy chairman Akio Takeyama in a statement.
Over the last 2 years, the Toyota brand has received an overall 5-star rating for seven of its vehicle models. Toyota has also developed many new and advanced technologies that enhance the vehicles’ safety and protection, at the same time set new standards for the automotive industry.
“The awards from ASEAN NCAP confirm the approach of Toyota Synergized Mobility to bring to the forefront the technological leadership of Toyota that will be used to make ever better cars,” said UMW Toyota Motors president Ravindran K.
Asean NCAP is an alliance between the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) and Global NCAP that was formed in 2011 in honor of the United Nations’ Decade of Action for Road Safety.
Throughout the decade, this collaboration has prioritised models in high demand that are manufactured and sold in the ASEAN region in order to present the public with the specific information they need on the vehicles. The Asean NCAP also carries out crash tests at their branches in Melaka and other branches under the organisation.
In the same announcement, the Toyota Majesty/Granvia has also won the Best Safety Performance Award for their safety assists system. The 11-seater Toyota Majesty is powered by a 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine paired with a six-speed torque converter automatic transmission. The 1GD-FTV B20 biodiesel ready engine produces 163 hp and 420 Nm of torque from 1,600 to 2,200 rpm.
Unfortunately, the Toyota Majesty is currently only available in Singapore, Thailand and Myanmar. Do you think Malaysia should be added to the list? Let us know in the comments down below!
