If the probe uncovers unreasonable operational weaknesses, action will be taken against Prasarana Malaysia Berhad.“The public has every right to expect a more efficient and reliable service,” Loke said, adding that Prasarana’s chief executive officer has been instructed to present a full explanation and an immediate recovery action plan at a post-Cabinet meeting.

However, the ripple effects extended well into the late morning.Commuters barely had time to recover before another glitch struck in the afternoon. At around 3pm, a malfunction involving both train doors and platform screen doors at KLCC station has forced a temporary halt in service.

Although technicians resolved the issue within about 15 minutes and operations resumed by 3.15pm, severe crowding quickly built up at key interchange stations.By 4.15pm, Rapid KL warned of significant congestion across major connecting points and advised passengers to consider alternative routes. Those heading towards KLCC were encouraged to bypass the usual LRT–MRT interchange and instead switch from the MRT Kajang Line at Tun Razak Exchange to the MRT Putrajaya Line, stopping at Persiaran KLCC station, which is within walking distance of the Petronas Twin Towers.Rapid KL later apologised for the repeated service interruptions and thanked passengers for their patience.

Gan, a Chery TIGGO 7 PRO owner for over a year, entered the contest during a routine service visit to the Chery Klang outlet.&nbsp;She said she was initially skeptical when contacted by the sales team about her win. “I had to excuse myself from a meeting to answer the phone. At first, I thought it was a prank, but they sent me the video of the live draw to confirm it,” she added.

The long-delayed <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.carz.com.my/2026/02/lrt3-shah-alam-line-expected-to-open-in-june" target="_blank" style="">LRT3 Shah Alam Line is now expected to begin operations by June 2026</a>, with final testing currently underway, Transport Minister Anthony Loke confirmed in the Dewan Negara.

The delay, Loke stressed, is not due to cost-cutting measures but unresolved signalling and system stability issues discovered during fault-free run (FFR) testing and commissioning. 
"So far, 14 out of 22 train sets have completed trials, with the remainder still undergoing testing. After all trains pass the FFR stage, the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) will conduct final inspections before approval for operations," he added.The project’s timeline has shifted multiple times. <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.carz.com.my/2026/02/lrt3-shah-alam-line-expected-to-open-in-june" target="_blank" style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; white-space-collapse: preserve;">It was initially slated to open in September 2024, then pushed to December 2025, and now June 2026 following software and system-related issues identified during testing.</a>Beyond delays, LRT3 has also faced scrutiny over its rising cost. Launched in 2016 with an initial price tag of RM9 billion, the figure later ballooned to RM31.7 billion after previously excluded costs including consultancy fees, operational expenses and interest during construction.In 2018, the government revised the scope, shelving five stations and cancelling one, which brought the cost down to RM16.63 billion.
Subsequently, five stations which consist of Tropicana, Raja Muda, Temasya, Bukit Raja and Bandar Botanik were reinstated, adding RM5.3 billion to the project and bringing the total cost to RM21.93 billion.

As for accountability, <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.carz.com.my/2026/02/lrt3-shah-alam-line-expected-to-open-in-june" target="_blank" style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; white-space-collapse: preserve;">the project carries liquidated ascertained damages (LAD) of RM2.73 million per day for delays, equivalent to 0.024% of the total contract value.</a> The main contractor, Setia Utama LRT3, a unit of Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB) will be responsible for the compensation, although the final amount will only be determined once the project is fully completed.

The Shah Alam LRT3 line is targeted to begin operations by June 2026, with contractors liable for RM2.73 million per day in delay penalties.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said fares are expected to range between S$5 and S$7 per trip (around RM15 to RM22). Malaysia Rapid Transit Corporation (MRT Corp) has opened a<a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.carz.com.my/2025/11/penang-mutiara-lrt-construction-kicks-off-jan-2026" target="_blank" style=""> three-month public inspection period for the revised Penang Mutiara Light Rail Transit (LRT) project</a>, with a proposed six-kilometre cross-sea alignment now forming the centrepiece of the updated plan.
“The public consultation runs from February 24 to May 24 under Section 85 of the Land Public Transport Act 2010, giving Penang residents and stakeholders the opportunity to <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.carz.com.my/2025/07/penang-lrt-stays-within-rm16-billion-budget-mrt-corp" target="_blank" style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; white-space-collapse: preserve;">review changes to the route alignment, station locations and overall project scope,” the firm said in a statement.</a>At the heart of the revision is a direct rail link between Komtar on Penang Island and Penang Sentral on the mainland. MRT Corp said the revised scheme also includes around 1,000 additional parking bays at Penang Sentral, allowing commuters to park and continue their journey via LRT to Komtar, the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone and Penang International Airport.“The updated railway scheme reflects broader adjustments to development plans, including the scaling down of the Penang South Reclamation project. As a result, 3.15 kilometres of the original alignment within the reclaimed area and three previously planned stations have been removed,” it added.However, a 1.5-kilometre stretch of track on the reclaimed island will be retained. Construction began in 2025 and operations are targeted to commence in December 2031.

<a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.carz.com.my/2023/05/sambung-bayar-deal-is-legally-invalid-kpdn" target="_blank" style="">Sambung bayar schemes, where a car is sold before the bank loan is fully paid</a>, continue to pose serious legal and financial risks for Malaysians, authorities warn.
The latest incident occurred in Kedah, when a Toyota Camry Hybrid was confiscated by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) during an Ops Luxury operation at Kilometer 1, Jalan Sungai Ular–Taman Bestari, Kulim.&nbsp;Officers found the vehicle operating without valid road tax or insurance, and issued a P22 summons along with a confiscation notice <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.carz.com.my/2025/10/loke-pay-early-pay-less-no-more-special-summons-discounts" target="_blank">under Section 64(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987</a>. The car was taken to JPJ’s Kulim depot for further action, according to a post on the state JPJ Facebook page.

JPJ stressed that vehicle owners remain responsible for ensuring road tax and insurance are valid, even if someone else is using the car under a sambung bayar arrangement.

“This type of deal is illegal and carries significant risks for both parties,” it says.Sambung bayar schemes work by having a buyer pay a deposit and continue monthly instalments on a vehicle still legally owned by the seller and the bank.&nbsp;While it may seem attractive for both sides, the practice is considered fraudulent under the Hire Purchase Act 1967. Offenders can face fines of up to RM30,000 and/or three years’ imprisonment.Legal experts also note that contracts for sambung bayar arrangements are unenforceable under the Contracts Act 1950. Buyers are not legally protected, and ownership of the vehicle remains with the original owner until the hire-purchase loan is fully paid. Authorities also warn of additional dangers, including cloned vehicles, tampered mileage, and unverified cars, which could result in confiscation or fines under the Road Transport Act 1987.“Always complete the ownership transfer to avoid legal, financial, and insurance issues,” authorities advise.

Improving the speed and reliability of <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.carz.com.my/2026/02/traffic-nightmare-hits-klang-valley-economy-feels-the-burn" target="_blank" style="">Malaysia’s existing public transport system should be the immediate priority in tackling congestion</a>, rather than introducing measures to curb vehicle ownership, transport experts say.
They were responding to suggestions that limiting car ownership could help address worsening traffic congestion. However, <a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.carz.com.my/2026/02/west-coast-expressway-expects-35-traffic-surge-for-cny" target="_blank" style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; white-space-collapse: preserve;">Transport Minister Anthony Loke</a> dismissed the idea, describing it as a sensitive issue.Loke said traffic congestion has become a recurring pattern, particularly ahead of festive periods due to company dinners, shopping activities, and early interstate travel. “Transport outcomes reflect economic signals. If ownership is affordable while congestion costs are largely externalised, people will naturally buy more cars,” he told NST.Wan Agyl said the recent diesel subsidy rationalisation in 2024 and reforms to RON95 pricing indicate a gradual policy recalibration.“The key is not restricting ownership abruptly, but aligning cost signals gradually,” he added.With ownership restrictions unlikely, he stressed that short-term congestion management should focus on strengthening the performance of existing public transport services.Among the immediate measures proposed are stricter enforcement of dedicated bus lanes during peak hours, increasing service frequency on high-demand routes such as MRT2 (Putrajaya Line), KTM services and major trunk corridors, as well as encouraging staggered reporting hours for government-linked companies and large office clusters in Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya, and Cyberjaya.Despite significant rail investments, Malaysia’s public transport modal share remains between 20 and 25 per cent, below the 40 per cent target.“The issue is not a lack of infrastructure; it is behavioral economics and convenience,” Wan Agyl further noted.&nbsp;He also highlighted the importance of improving first- and last-mile connectivity through better sidewalks, shaded walkways, safe crossings, and more reliable feeder bus services. Feeder buses, he said, should be given peak-hour priority where road conditions allow.
Parking reform near transit stations, particularly reducing minimum parking requirements within a 500 to 800 metre radius could also gradually influence commuter behaviour, he added.On congestion charges, Wan Agyl noted that global cities such as Singapore and London implemented pricing mechanisms only after establishing robust public transport alternatives.“In Malaysia, the network is still being strengthened,” he said, citing the yet-to-be-operational MRT3, delays to LRT3, and inconsistent feeder reliability.Meanwhile, Road Safety Council of Malaysia executive council member Datuk Suret Singh called for a strategic action plan to ensure 40 per cent of trips in Greater Klang Valley are made via public transport by 2030 under the Transport Masterplan.

He said improving first- and last-mile connectivity and ensuring reliable service frequency are crucial to encouraging commuters to shift away from private vehicles. Suret also suggested introducing congestion charges during peak hours and installing digital displays at bus stops to provide real-time arrival information.Experts maintain that without faster, more predictable, and convenient public transport, efforts to manage congestion through ownership limits or pricing measures are unlikely to succeed.
