Honda Motor Company has aimed to be a brand independent of internal combustion engines by 2040.
According to the newly appointed CEO, Toshihiro Mibe admits the target looks quite challenging, but the manufacturer aims to set a high target.
Apart from that, Honda also wants to ensure that the ratio of electric vehicles (EVs) and fuel cell vehicles (FCEVs) sold in the primary market reaches 40 per cent by 2030 and increases to 80 per cent by 2035 before 100 per cent by 2040 globally.
It is understood that Honda is ready to invest a total of 5 trillion yen (RM189 billion) in the development and research (R&D) unit to achieve the target.
The announcement came a day after Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga announced a target to reduce emissions by 46 percent by 2030.
Other than that, Honda USA also announced a partnership with General Motors to introduce two new EV models to the market by the year 2024.
The two models developed from GM's Ultium platform will each be sold under two different brands, namely Honda and Acura.
