Huawei To Build Semiconductor Chips, A Possible Electric Vehicle In The Works?
Many automakers are suffering due to the current global semiconductor shortage that is affecting the automobile industry. As a result of the limited availability of semiconductors that power key features, the production of some models have temporarily halted.
Joining the bandwagon of tech giants such as Intel and Samsung, Huawei is currently expanding its smart car partnership with state-owned Chongqing Changan Automobile. The collaboration will oversee the design and development of auto-use semiconductors.
A report from Reuters unveiled that both parties have been working together informally on chips for the last few months - with a new joint venture expected to establish sometime soon.
Aside from the partnership with Changan to manufacture smart cars under an as-yet-unnamed joint brand, Huawei is also contemplating EVs under its brand. This is seen as a big step forward, competing with brands such as Apple and Oppo - which are already in the works of developing their own electric car and even Tesla, an EV household name.
It also said that Huawei is in talks of the EV unit with a carmaker, though no further confirmation or details are available.
According to their existing smart car partnership, Huawei is responsible for the vehicle's operating system and cabin technology, while Changan will lead in vehicle design and engineering.
Will the development of Huawei’s semiconductor chips and possible EV prove to be a stepping stone for the tech powerhouse? Let us know your thoughts down below!
