Subaru Forester: How Well Does This SUV Perform?
Not too long ago, we got the chance to try the Subaru Forester, specifically the 2.0 i-S Eyesight variant courtesy of Motor Image Malaysia Sdn Bhd, the official distributor of Subaru vehicles in Malaysia.

As a recap, the Forester Eyesight goes for approximately RM169,788 (on-the-road without insurance and SST exemption). Compared to its other variants, the Eyesight brings forth the name-sake Eyesight features and additional safety features such as Pre-Collision Braking, Throttle Management and Lane Sway and Departure Warning, to name a few.

From a first glance, enhancements are seen on the exterior: C-shaped daytime running lights, headlamp washers, and View Monitor cameras located on the side mirrors. Other than that, the vehicle maintains a generic and simple look which is the opposite of its list of safety and driving features.

Interior-wise, the vehicle sports a spacious cabin, which is also backed by Shaun’s statement, “I can feel how spacious this car is the views that you can see it’s really really wide. I can see so much of the outside, even in my side mirror,”. Unfortunately, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not available, but there’s always the good old Bluetooth option.

The vehicle rides on the Subaru Global Platform, which helps in improving the driving experience. With the combination of the Subaru Boxer Engine fitted under the hood, the writer experienced better handling and driving dynamics whenever driving this SUV, especially during long-distance driving. Additionally, the X-Mode feature is also included, which allows for better traction and grip on off-road environments and terrains.

The star of the show would definitely be the Eyesight feature, which both our writer and Shaun put to the test. It was a new experience for the writer, as these features are not usually available in most vehicles. The Adaptive Cruise Control is seamless, with the option of setting the speed, which is convenient when driving on highways.

With the Lane Sway and Departure Warning, the writer felt safe whenever the vehicle accidentally steers out of the lane. The vehicle produces a beeping sound, indicating the driver to steer back. This ensures that the driver is aware, even with the vehicle moving autonomously.
“That can actually help you keep less tired, giving you more comfort,” Shaun said.
The writer couldn’t agree more with Shaun when he stated, “Having the eyesight, the adaptive cruise control, lane sway and departure warning really gives me not only a more sense of safety but also a very comfortable driving.”
Navigating through windy roads and overcoming vehicles, the Forester Eyesight did a fantastic job accomplishing that. Thanks to the low centre of gravity, the writer felt confident in driving this SUV as it gives the feeling of driving a sedan or coupe.

In terms of performance, the vehicle can produce 153 hp and 196 Nm. After a combination of urban and highway driving, our team recorded average fuel consumption of 10.3 litres for every 100 kilometres. Compared with its predecessor, the Eyesight variant definitely guarantees more savings in terms of fuel efficiency and has better acceleration and maximum power.
Additional features include 8-Way Power-Adjustable Driver’s Seat, Pin Code Access, seven airbags, ISOFIX child seat mounting points, electronic brake distribution, anti-lock braking system as well as brake assist.
Overall, the team had a pleasant experience with the Subaru Forester Eyesight. While the list of driving and safety features are impressive, Subaru definitely can consider levelling up their game in terms of its exterior.
