Delivering more power with its new all-wheel drive system, Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia’s new facelifted version of their D-segment Arteon.
Locally assembled in Pekan, Pahang, the 2021 refreshed five-door coupe Arteon comes in one variant only, which is the Arteon R-Line 4 Motion.
Now let’s take a gander at how the updated Arteon fare against its predecessor the 2020 Arteon 2.0 TSI R-Line and three of its competitors the 2021 BWM 3 Series 320i Sport, 2020 Mercedes-Benz C-Class C 200 AMG Line and 2019 Audi A3 Sedan.
In terms of pricing, the Arteon R-Line 4 Motion is priced at RM 248,692, the 2020 Arteon 2.0 TSI R-Line at RM 221,065, the BWM 3 Series 320i Sport at RM 230,764, the Mercedes Benz C-Class C 200 AMG Line at RM 251,587 and the Audi A3 Sedan at RM 231,359.
Performance-wise, the new Arteon R-Line 4 Motion sports a 2.0 TSI turbocharged direct injection petrol 4-cylinder engine that is married to a Dual-Clutch Automatic Wet (DSG) 7-speed direct shift gearbox.
The mill produces 276 hp of power at 5,100 to 6,500 rpm and a torque of 350 Nm at 1,700 to 5,600 rpm. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds, reach a top speed of 250 km/h and has a fuel efficiency of 7.4 L/100 km.
As for its predecessor, the 2020 Arteon 2.0 TSI R-Line harbours a 2.0-Litre TSI turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine under its hood, which is paired to a 7-speed DSG transmission.
Its turbocharged powertrain can produce 188 hp of power at 4,180 rpm and 320 Nm of torque at 1,500 rpm. It can dash from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds while hitting a top speed of 239 km/h and has a fuel consumption of 6.3 L/100 km.
Moving on to its first competitor, the BWM 3 Series 320i Sport is fitted with a 2.0-litre TwinPower Turbo petrol engine that has an 8-Speed Steptronic Sports Transmission installed.
Said powertrain can produce 181 hp of power at 5,000 rpm and 300 Nm of torque at 1,350 rpm, enabling it to dash from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.1 seconds, generate a top speed of 235 km/h and a fuel efficiency of 6.3 L/100 km.
Second challenger, the Mercedes Benz C-Class C 200 AMG Line has been fitted with a 2.0-Litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that gets paired to a 9G-TRONIC transmission.
Generating a maximum power of 204 PS at 5,800 rpm and maximum torque of 300 Nm at 1,600 rpm, the C-Class C 200 AMG Line can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.1 seconds while hitting a top speed of 250 km/h. It also has a fuel consumption of 17.5 km/l.
Coming in third is the Audi A3 Sedan. It sports a 4-cylinder inline petrol engine with direct injection and turbocharging that gets a 7-speed DSG gearbox mated to it.
This final contender can produce 150 hp of maximum power at 5,000 rpm to 6,000 rpm and 250 Nm at 1,500 rpm to 3,500 rpm. It has a 224 km/h top speed, 8.2 seconds of 0 to 100 km/h sprint time and fuel consumption of 4.9 L/100 km.
