Built To Shift The Sports Car Paradigm, Polestar Uncloaks The O2 E-Roadster Concept

Providing a top-down driving enjoyment, Polestar, the Swedish-based automaker presents a new electric roadster concept, the Polestar O2.

The moniker is not a reference to the oxide anion, but it refers to the O2 being Polestar’s second attempt at an electric concept.

Technical details of the concept are very sparse. It’s unclear what the acceleration time, top speed and range are, though, there is an indication about the battery capacity.

According to Polestar’s chief executive officer, Thomas Ingenlath, the O2 has over 110 kWh of battery power and a battery of that size can still be packaged in its short wheelbase.

Notably, that reference made by Ingenlath is courtesy of the new platform architecture that Polestar is showcasing in the concept. I.e., a bonded aluminum unibody.

Enticingly designed to be a prophecy of the future, Polestar described the O2 to adopt classic sports car proportions, in terms of its silhouette.

Be it a 2nd generation concept, it still carries recognizable design cues from the first, the Precept. Specifically, its striking looks with the sharp lines and the lighting signature.

Other than that, Polestar confirms that the new O2 concept will arrive as an electric two-seater, hardtop convertible with mono-material interior and a built-in drone for aerial photography.

In a nutshell, Ingenlath said the O2 wasn’t designed for the rev-heads at all. As a matter of fact, it exists to show that there’s a new paradigm when it comes to sports cars.

He concluded, “We wanted to make sure people understand the architecture is capable of catering for sports cars like this. The high torque, high power, P10 engine that we developed for the Precept will find, in the top peak performance version, a home in all of our products. And of course, it could be packaged in the roadster here as well.”

Alas, with only images to tell and none of the specifications to derive from, it’s a little hard to judge how the electric roadster will fare.

Regardless, the new Polestar O2 concept does make for an interesting premise and only time will tell if it has all the possibilities in its favor of becoming the electric sports car to beat.
