STARS AI-Powered Traffic Lights Launched in Perak
Recently, Perak has launched its first intelligent traffic light (STARS) system that integrated with artificial intelligence (AI) functions.
There are several other states that has been implemented with STARS including Penang, Johor, and Selangor.
STARS is a project of service subscription agreement under partnership between Ipoh City Council (MBI) and Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM).
With its artificial intelligence and the ability to analyse video, the system helps to reduce traffic congestion and optimize traffic smoothness.

The system will smoothen traffic stream to save more time and cost for road users as AI is capable of detecting vehicles in images from traffic cameras.
Through an object detection algorithm, the intelligent traffic management system will detect various vehicles on the road from images captured through cameras installed on the road.
This information will then be sent further to the control centre where the AI technology will process the traffic density in real time.
Therefore, this system can be used to reduce waiting time at road intersections.
4 STARS installed locations:
• Jalan Sultan Idris Shah and Jalan Laksamana
• Jalan Sultan Idris Shah and Jalan Datuk Onn Jaafar
• Jalan Sultan Idris Shah and Jalan Raja Musa Aziz
• Jalan Sultan Idris Shah and Jalan Raja Ekram

According to Ipoh Mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin, he mentioned that the implementation is in line with MBI’s plan to make Ipoh a low-carbon emissions city by 2030.
