Panasonic, A Major Tesla Supplier, Wants To Boost Battery Density By 20%

In the upcoming years, Panasonic, a major battery supplier to Tesla, plans to make significant advancements in battery energy density. According to the firm, it plans to raise density by 20% by 2030.

When it comes to EVs, battery density is everything. The battery system is usually the most expensive part of an EV and in some cases, more density means more range. For instance, a Tesla Model Y would have a greater driving range of more than 62 miles. On the other hand, it can also entail larger, more comfortable, and lighter vehicles with comparable ranges.

For those who are unaware, a battery's energy density is essentially its capacity to store energy in a specific volume.

If Panasonic were successful in increasing density by 20 percent, the company's top-tier cell would supposedly have 900 watt-hours per litre (wh/l). That represents a significant advancement over the current 750 wh/l cell.

According to the source, investors are watching to see if Tesla and Panasonic can maintain their market-leading positions as manufacturers release more and more electric vehicle (EV) models.

Currently, Tesla is creating a new, larger-form 4680 battery that is intended to have lower production costs and a greater range than the 2170 battery currently in use. However, Panasonic declined to comment on whether the new battery technology they are developing would be used to those battery packs.

Although we may have to wait a few years for this higher battery density technology, at least we have something to look forward to.
