Tesla Abandons Cybertruck Plans For Australia And NZ, RHD Future Unclear

Nearly seven years after accepting reservations, Tesla has told Australian and New Zealand customers that the Cybertruck isn't coming after all.
The American EV maker has abandoned plans to produce its electric pick-up for the two right-hand-drive (RHD) markets, with reservation holders notified on 23 October 2026. But does that also spell trouble for the future of an RHD Cybertruck?
- CANCELLED: Cybertruck plans for Australia and New Zealand.
- REFUNDS: Full reservation payments returned after customers confirm their details.
- RHD FUTURE: No production right-hand-drive Cybertruck has been announced.
What Happens To Cybertruck Reservation Holders?

According to WhichCar Australia, Tesla has notified affected reservation holders that its Cybertruck plans for both markets have been discontinued.
Customers are being offered full refunds, expected to be processed within 30 days after they confirm their refund details. Tesla is also offering eligible reservation holders a complimentary year of Full Self-Driving (Supervised), subject to an additional condition.
To receive the complimentary FSD (Supervised) subscription, eligible reservation holders must order a new Tesla Model 3 or Model Y. The offer is not an unconditional benefit for every reservation holder.
From RHD Ambitions To Cancellation

In March 2025, Tesla Australia country director Thom Drew told EV Central that he was personally confident the Cybertruck could reach Australia, with the company exploring the business case for right-hand-drive production.
However, Drew struck a more cautious tone in an April 2025 interview, acknowledging that its arrival was far from guaranteed. By May, he was again stressing that the vehicle remained under consideration.
Despite those efforts, Tesla has now discontinued its Cybertruck plans for Australia and New Zealand, leaving the future of a production RHD version uncertain.
Is There Still Hope For An RHD Cybertruck?
For now, the Cybertruck remains a left-hand-drive-only model, with no production RHD version announced.
Tesla has not publicly explained why it abandoned Australia and New Zealand. Engineering costs, regulatory hurdles and market demand may have influenced the decision, but none has been confirmed as the reason.
The cancellation doesn't necessarily rule out a future RHD Cybertruck. However, with Australia no longer in the picture, one of its clearest potential markets has disappeared.
Cybertruck Cancellation: Frequently Asked Questions
Why did Tesla cancel the Cybertruck for Australia and New Zealand?
Tesla has confirmed that its plans for the two markets have been discontinued, but it has not publicly provided a detailed explanation for the decision. Potential engineering, regulatory and commercial challenges remain unconfirmed explanations.
Will Cybertruck reservation holders receive refunds?
Yes. Affected reservation holders are being offered full refunds, expected to be processed within 30 days after they confirm their refund details. Eligible customers may also receive a one-year FSD (Supervised) subscription if they order a new Model 3 or Model Y.
Has Tesla stopped producing the Cybertruck worldwide?
No. The decision concerns plans for Australia and New Zealand. The Cybertruck remains in production in left-hand-drive configuration, while a production right-hand-drive version has not been announced.
