Traffic Cameras In KL May Be Utilised To Penalize Guilty Motorists - FT Ministry

The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and the investigation section of the traffic police are in talks with the Federal Territories Ministry about the viability of using the city's 5,000 traffic cameras to penalise drivers who break traffic laws.

This is part of a task force set up last month to oversee and study traffic flow in Kuala Lumpur, a move aimed to reduce the worsening congestion in the city.

The suggestion would be discussed by the ministry with Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Mahadi Che Ngah, according to Deputy Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Jalaludin Alias. The mayor has also been told about upgrading all of the city traffic cameras in Kuala Lumpur.

Jalaludin said that in order to confirm the validity of issuing traffic summonses based on evidence obtained from CCTV photos, the authority would consult with the KL traffic police, as well as their legal counsel and the Attorney General's office.

“Our cameras can capture real-time images accurately. So we hope that we can issue summons using the images to those flouting traffic rules. We believe this will educate those who continuously break traffic rules and help reduce congestion," added Jalaludin.

The cameras have the ability to record illegal activity, such as hawkers operating in prohibited locations, illegal parking, and parking in bus lanes and on yellow lines.

Jalaludin also emphasizes that they will iron out the legal issue before implementing to avoid complaints because some may take the issue up with the courts when being issued summons using these footages.
