A Perodua Alza driver was caught at Bandar Laguna Merbok here after a 25km high-speed chase drama from the Plus Expressway toll plaza in Sungai Dua yesterday.
The incident began at 11.45 a.m. when a group of Bukit Aman traffic police officers stopped the MPV at a roadblock for speeding.
Instead of stopping, the Padang Besar, Perlis driver, 23, stepped on the gas and drove off, causing two police officers in a Honda Civic patrol car to pursue him.
Assistant Commissioner Zaidy Che Hassan, the head of Kuala Muda police, claimed that the suspect had driven recklessly on the expressway from Km113 to Km108, endangering other drivers.
"The driver then took the Sungai Petani Selatan toll plaza exit by ramming the boom barrier before speeding towards Lencongan Barat road”
"The MPV then crashed into a Honda Accord while beating a traffic light at Laguna Merbok, sending the Perodua Alza to crash onto a road railing before hitting a sign post”
"The vehicle was spinning, causing the front and rear left wheels to explode," Zaidy said in a statement.
The driver and his passenger attempted to leave on foot, he continued, but the pursuing police officers were able to capture them after a brief struggle.
When the police searched the car, Zaidy claimed they did not discover any illegal substances.
"Checks showed the driver from Kampung Padang Mawa Kok Mak, Padang Besar Utara in Padang Besar, Perlis was driving without a licence.
"The driver and his 21-year-old passenger from Kampung Lubok Kawah, Jitra were taken to the Kuala Muda police headquarters for further investigation," he said.
According to Zaidy, the 19-year-old driver of the Honda Civic that was involved in the collision with the Perodua Alza was unharmed.
