All-New 2023 Honda Civic Type-R, Detailed Specifications Divulged

July was its official unveiling, and this September it will go on sale in Japan. The all-new 2023 Honda Civic Type-R, detailed specifications divulged.
As stated in CariCarz.com’s previous article, the sixth generation Civic Type-R is the most powerful Honda production unit to date, delivering the best driving experience in the hot hatch segment.

Performance-wise, it has been significantly improved and track proven, namely on racetracks in Japan, North America and Europe, including testing on Germany's infamous Nurburgring.
Lurking under its new vented aluminium hood is an even more powerful version of Honda's award-winning K20C1 engine, of which its horsepower, torque and response have all been improved.

These upgrades were achieved by a redesigned turbocharger, increased air intake flow rate, and a new more efficient exhaust system that features a straight pipe design and an active exhaust valve.
The turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine now produces 315 HP at 6,500 rpm and 420 NM of torque at 2,600 to 4,000 rpm.

With improvements of 9 HP and 20 NM, the new Civic Type R is one of the most powerful cars in its class per litre, with a specific output of 159 HP/litre, up from the previous-generation's 153.
Then, to improve engine cooling for a sustained and optimal performance during extreme driving, it features a larger grille opening, bigger radiator and a new large-diameter fan.

On top of that, the new active exhaust valve opens at a higher rpm to heighten and enhance the sound of the engine for a more connected driving experience.
Next, the Type R's six-speed manual transmission has also been upgraded with a lighter flywheel and a revised rev-match system.

Outstandingly, the new system ensures a perfectly paired rev-matching when shifting down through the gears, helping maintain stability on corner entry.
Said high-strength gearbox has also gained a high-rigidity lever and optimized shift gate pattern for a reassured and hyper-precise gear change.

What’s more, its chassis is now based on the all-new eleventh generation Civic Hatchback, providing a more rigid body structure that supports both improved dynamics and refinement.
Its wheelbase has been extended around 1.4 inches for a smoother ride and greater stability. Now measuring up to 108 inches, it's the longest wheelbase in its class.

Furthermore, its front and rear tracks are also significantly wider, at which 1.0 inches have been added in the front and 0.75 inches in the rear.
Together with a retuned dual-axis strut front and multilink rear suspension, these changes improve straight-line stability and steering feel.

For exceptional braking power, its two-piece front brake rotors reduce unsprung weight, while improved brake cooling and a retuned brake booster, enhances feel and controllability.
In terms of drive modes, it has four pre-set performance settings, providing different modes for the engine, steering, suspension and engine sound.
Aside from Comfort, Sport and R+ modes, it features a new 'Individual Mode', a mode that enables customization of the driving experience.

Exterior-wise, the new Civic Type-R developed by the HRD Sakura Super GT team is now more aerodynamically efficient, generating more downforce improving high speed stability.
Designed in Japan, its new muscular body with broad fenders flared out over wider tracks, is 0.8 inches longer, 0.5 inches lower and 0.6 inches wider than its predecessor.

Helping it stick to the asphalt is a set of lightweight 19-inch matte black alloy wheels, wrapped in 20 mm wider bespoke Michelin Pilot Sport 4S rubbers.
According to Honda, the new wheels use a special ‘reverse rim’ design that improves the stability of the tire contact patch under load.

All body panels forward of the A-pillars are new and unique to the Civic Type-R, including a new more aggressive front bumper design.
Sporting a lower stance, it is emphasized by wider rear doors that’s also exclusive to its build, along with a reshaped rear bumper that reveals its new signature three round exhaust outlets.
Other than that, it has a redesigned rear spoiler with aluminium foundations, and a new rear diffuser that further intensifies the downforce and reduces the drag.

Interior-wise, the cockpit of the new Civic Type-R enhances the exhilaration of driving with emotive, performance-focused details and features.
Notably, it comes with Type R's iconic red seats, carpet and trim, a redesigned aluminium shift knob, and a serialized Type-R plate on the dash.

Positioned lower than before, the driver is bolstered in a new, lighter, body-stabilizing sport seat, yet with greater visibility thanks to thinner pillars, relocated side mirror, and a lower hood.
Functional yet aesthetically pleasing, the new front sports seats come with suede-effect upholstery, which offer both great support and comfort on the track and during long drives.

Elsewhere, to better support performance driving, its exclusive new digital instrument cluster features clean, easy-to-read graphics and an extensive selection of displays.
High-tech, the design features a large tachometer and gear-position display, plus a multi-information display, along with a second new meter design, exclusive to the Civic Type R's +R mode.

Specifically, the latter allows the driver to obtain necessary information instantly, with the engine rpm, and gear position placed at the top.
That’s not all, a racing-inspired illuminated rev indicator located above the gauge cluster also provides the driver with a quick indication of engine rpm during performance driving.

Accompanying all of that is a new 9-inch colour touchscreen, the largest touchscreen ever in a Type R, and it supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Qi-compatible wireless charging and a Bose Centrepoint premium sound system, which was custom-engineered precisely for the interior of the eleventh generation Civic, are also standard features.

Another exclusive feature is a new enhanced version of the Honda LogR Performance Datalogger that combines the Type R's onboard computer and sensors with a new built-in vehicle app.
This helps with the monitoring and recording of a variety of performance parameters in real time when driving on the track or other closed courses.

Upgraded, the Honda LogR no longer needs a smartphone app. Now, it can be used via the on-board system or can be directly connected to the smartphone for added capability and data sharing.
Lastly, its key features include a stopwatch to record lap times, a tire friction circle in 3D motion that displays the maximum tire force the vehicle can achieve, and a scoring function to help improve driving skills on the track.

Overall, the new 2023 Civic Type R is built at the Yorii Plant in Japan, and its pricing will be disclosed closer to its launch this month.
