The new SUKE highway is set to open very soon
Heads up motorists, the new 24.4km-long Sungai Besi-Ulu Kelang Elevated Expressway, or better known by its SUKE abbreviation, is set to open up very soon. Here are several key bits to look forward to from this project that cost operators PROLINTAS RM5.7 billion to construct since 2016.
One key feature of the SUKE is a 56.4-metre-tall segmental box grider bridge, which now stands as the highest superstructure ever constructed within the Klang Valley. This bridge, which spans alongside the Sungai Buloh-Kajang MRT Line and the Grand Saga-runned Cheras-Kajang Expressway, has even secured its spot in the Malaysia Book of records as a result.
Besides that, the SUKE also has Malaysia’s first helicoidal (or spiralled) on-/off-ramp design ever installed. This highly engineered bit of road is located near the SUKE’s Cheras-Kajang interchange, promising both an efficient and safe experience for users.
With the innovative design and engineering of the SUKE, it sees 90% of its route elevated off the ground. And thanks to its bifurcated (or split) structure design of which, it allows sunlight to shine through to the Ampang River located below and shine light across the 1.6km-long walking and jogging trail present there.
Crucially, the SUKE aims to further boost connectivity for motorists along its route. It boats 14 dedicated interchanges that covers the areas of Sri Petaling, Sungai Besi, Alam Damai, Cheras-Kajang, Cheras-Hartamas, Bukit Teratai, Tasik Tambahan, Permai, Kosas, Pekan Ampang, Ampang Point, Ulu Kelang, as well as both Hillview and Bukit Antarangsa.
On top of that, the SUKE will connect to a ring of existing highway networks given that it runs parallel to both the Shah Alam Expressway (KESAS) and Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2). Other highways accessible via the SUKE include the KL-Seremban Highway, the Sungai Besi Expressway (BESRAYA), the Cheras-Kajang Grand Saga highway, as well as both the Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway (AKLEH) and the Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway (DUKE) networks.
Besides all that, motorists can also look forward to the presence of two lay-by areas plus a rest-and service area located at Tasik Tambahan. Drive an EV? Fret not as the SUKE will also see the presence of six EV charging stations along its route too.
As for tolls, there will be three plazas present, including the country’s tallest multi-storey toll plaza complex located at Alam Damai. The other two toll plazas supporting it are located at Bukit Teratai and Ampang.
No dates have been specified just yet, but operators PROLINTAS are set to welcome motorists onto the SUKE very soon. More details will be available via the expressway’s dedicated website, mysuke.com.my.
[UPDATE: Sept 16, 2022]
Thanks to our BM team’s reporting, we now know that the SUKE highway has opened to the public starting from 12PM today, Sept 16, 2022. On top of that, travellers will also enjoy toll-free travels across this new expressway for one month.
